Nature & Parks

The Great Orme is a limestone peak in North Wales, and it's famous for its views. The walk around the peak is very popular, and it's also possible to take the cable car up to the summit. There are many shops, restaurants, and bars in Llandudno near the mountain peak.

Lovely walks, nice tram journey available and great views of the coastline.

Steven Dodd β€” Google review

We walked up to the orme going past the tramway station, quite a steep climb that way. Some great views on the way up. We didn't use the tram but a good way to get up there if you have mobility issues. Some lovely views at the top there is a cafe at the top, insure of the menu or prices as we didn't use it. Several paths around the orme again the views are stunning. We went to St. Tudno's Church lovely inside very peaceful. Definitely worth a visit. We walked back down a different path which started after we came out ofthe church yard it came past the ski centre and ended back in town I thought it was a better path not so steep.

Adrian Lee β€” Google review

Just amazing views all around and great hiking. We completed the ordnance survey route, just about three hours to complete with amazing scenery all around. Peaceful and quiet, very relaxing.

Michael Jones β€” Google review

Great place for a walk, walked around it from the West shore where there are some great views to be had.The heather was in full bloom when we visited - lovely.Got stared at by a gang of Great Orme ram goats - I didn't stare back πŸ˜‡.

rooie16 β€” Google review

Absolutely love this place! It was a bit difficult to walk till the top without the train and cable car but was a great experience. Really is a great spot for hiking in a sunny winter day.

Amy Zhao β€” Google review

truly love wales..so beautiful.. always breathtaking views.. am always stunned..always

mei shiraki β€” Google review

Nice place to come and bring a picnic. Can get very busy when the weather is nice but it is well worth the steep trip to the top to observe the views across the town and out to sea. There are loads of things to do whilst up here, the mines and the old church are great to explore. A good place to bring the camera and take some pictures.

Leon Connelly β€” Google review

I visited hwylfa'r ceirw 2 rows of white stone for around 100yards towards the sea formingAn avenue/track way ...you only get to see them clearly in winter/early spring when the bracken is at its lowest. There are also 2 round houses at the start and to the left of the rows as your looking towards sea..and the questionably named roman well is close by ...diwrnod gwych....great day

martin cottington β€” Google review

Went back for a visit after 10 years, was a beautiful sunny day which made it better albeit very windy, stunning views all around, small cafe open next to the playground, parking was cash or card.

Lisa Sykes β€” Google review

Took the tram up as it was a hot day, Excellent views as we went up, Decent cafe at top which gets busy, As for the views, Just stunning, we walked all around and came across the goat's and sheep, There is another cafe on the far side, which is handy on a hot day. A must visit when in Llandudno.

Darryl Pitman β€” Google review

Wonderful scenery. You can drive or walk.If driving, be aware of the sheep. Sometimes, they can appear where you expect the least. If walking to the top, have in mind if the weather gets windy, cable cars might not be working for safety precious.

Aurelija Pe?iuko β€” Google review

Definitely worth the worth visit and the views are brilliant. There's a few ways to get up and down but be aware half way tickets cannot be purchased at the half way tram stop, only at the top or bottom.Plenty of space and nice little shop at the top.Would recommend.

Bruce W β€” Google review

Been a couple of times, and the drive up is amazing the scenery is beautiful, there's a church and cemetery half way up , loads of sheep and rabbits, it was a very windy day up at the very top, but lovely in the cafe, where you can buy sandwiches and lovely cakes, brilliant photo opportunities all around,

Cathy Selsby β€” Google review

What a great place for amazing panoramic view. So much going on, tram on one side, cable car on another. Also possible to get up by car. Cafe and toilets available, nice to just relax and enjoy the view

Jovita L. β€” Google review

Took the tram car up and the views was breath taking. Definitely worth a visit up. 2 Nice little cafΓ©s up there and mini golf a little park as well. Also a great souvenir shop.

Kelly Dransfield β€” Google review

Wish I could rate this place 10 stars! The toll is 4.5Β£ for a car in 2023 still very cheap considering free parking. The view from top is breathtaking. I never climbed that much height before but when reached there and saw the north side I was amazed. There is free parking, child play area, visitor toilet as well as cafe or eating place. You also can play mini golf, I can just seat and enjoy the green mountain top, blue sky and green/blue water views for hours. I recommend to go there on a sunny day for best views and also be careful to walk, its very windy. When you climb down and finish the full marine drive it will just gave wonderful memories.

Ahamed Chowdhury β€” Google review

Love this place. Can't visit Llandudno without a drive up the Orme. I've also been up there, in the past, using the tram, which is a great experience. Never used the cable cars though.

Cris Spen β€” Google review

Quite a nice place to visit. If you go on a nice day there are plenty of views to be had. A fun crazy golf course that opens after 11:00. The cafe if well priced and the cakes seem to be of ample portions. Go on a return journey by tram if that's your thing or drive to the top with stunning views. The only down side for me was the over priced car park at the top. Starts at Β£4.50.

Piers & Boardwalks

Llandudno Pier, an elegant Victorian structure adorned with a variety of seaside novelties and food stalls, serves as the epitome of a quintessential British seaside resort. As Wales' largest holiday town, Llandudno offers traditional family vacations and unique romantic getaways. This picturesque destination boasts long beaches on both sides of its peninsula, complemented by a magnificent and enchanting promenade.

Amazing bit of Victorian engineering. Always a pleasure to see and stroll along, a real trip down memory lane visiting the pier. Beautiful at night with the sea front all lit up. A great place to grab a coffee and sit for a while.

Chris Lewis β€” Google review

Great pier. Really lively, lots of small shops selling the usual souvenirs and refreshments. Big wheel near the prom, punch and Judy and arcades. Lovely views out to sea and Llandudno seafront. We even saw jellyfish in the gorgeous clear water. Highly recommended!

Susan Williams β€” Google review

The place is very lively and has a ton of things to do. From retro arcades to souvenirs, shopping, and tons of food options. The sea view from here is pretty amazing. The water is turquoise blue, and just standing on the pier and taking in the atmosphere can be a very healing experience.Highly recommend for a weekend visit here!

Mushfiqur Rahman β€” Google review

Very bracing walk out to the end of this Victorian pier. All the usual amusem*nts and hot, crunchy portion of chips to take back along the promenade. Wonderful.

Graham Senior β€” Google review

This was near perfect. Llandudno is such a beautiful place that coupled with the right weather it will remain in your hearts forever. There are many good food spots on the pier . Particularly liked the fish and chips. It was not overcrowded, but there were enough tourists to make it a jolly affair. Walking up and down the pier through the wind has such a calming effect on us.

Akhil Tomy β€” Google review

Lots of bits and bobs to do and look at. Bring money if you have kids because there are lots of rides!Fresh Donuts are highly recommended! The record shop had decent prices and there are a few arcades on the pier. Please leave a donation for Punch and Judy, even if you don't get to see the show. It's such a great tradition!

Melissa Wickison β€” Google review

What a great pier! It was honestly like stepping back in time with all the traditional rides for children and hook a duck etc.Great for people watching too. There was a great character walking up and down with his two toy monkeys in a pram and music playing! It put a smile on my face. Great bar at the end of the pier and amusem*nts too.

Tara β€” Google review

We had a wonderful time at the pier. It's a perfect place to enjoy beer and small snacks. We also had fun playing arcade games. The arcade at the beginning has more games, while the one at the end is less crowded. It's a place where you can spot both children and adults having a great time. Additionally, there are other small rides available for kids.

Shikha Shelly β€” Google review

Fantastic place of visit in North wales. No need to go down to the south of England for the beach gate away as this place’s scenery is incredible, calm, and relax. I wish I could have lived in this town for a long term. Will definitely come back to visit here on summertime. Also the town is loads of shops, restaurants, b&b, hotels.

Chalun Chankaew β€” Google review

Visited last weekend. Nice place to visit individually as well as with friends and family. Games are available for children. Lots of space to sit and enjoy many views. Many shops around. I definitely recommend visiting.

vaibhav pathak β€” Google review

Busy but unique atmosphere Pier. Lots of bits and bobs on a side, small pub at the end, and snack bar. Nice view to a Llandudno coast line. Definitely recommend you try fish and chips at the beginning of the pier - worth waiting in a queue!

Anna GΕ‚ogowska β€” Google review

It was a gorgeous day weather wise, so an hour or so on the pier. Some lovely little shops, one with some fantastic art in to purchase. Stopped for a soft drink and a sit down to people watch. Lots to do for families, children's rides, etc. Toilets also available. Will definitely be back

Janet Hull β€” Google review

Such a wonderful promenade and delightful pier to visit, even off season (January). The shops and refreshment kiosks at the Promenade end of the pier are really good quality, and the staff are so friendly.

Andy W on Gower β€” Google review

A perfect place to spend time with your family and friends. It has good options for snack and coffee. Near the entrance there is a a big area fir kids activities.

Dhiraj Loya β€” Google review

Not many of these are left now so it's well worth a visit. There are lots of things going on even out of season and the views off the pier are amazing. It can get a bit manic in the height of summer so if you want to enjoy this little gem at a more chilled pace then it is worth coming during the winter months. As with most places like this you have to have realistic expectations, the pier is a little rundown but for me that just adds to the charm, prices in the shops are a little high but that is just a sign of the times and most of what they sell is the usual tat that you get at this sort of place but that's the point of Coming. Combined with a walk around the town centre this makes for a very pleasant day out.

Paul Owens β€” Google review

A really lovely pier!! It has some great history behind it and you can see great care is taken of it!!Incredible views from the pier back to the buildings along the cost!!Amusem*nts on the end are decent and the toilets were definitely recently renovated!!!!

Ben Huson β€” Google review

Lovely old fashion pier which we enjoyed walking around. there was a lovely pub at the end and surprisingly in February everything was open, well almost everything. The arcades were old-fashioned too with penny slots and certainly gave off a nostalgic vibe. The views of the bay were great from the end of the pier too.

Wild About Nature β€” Google review

The pier let us view the stunning the scene of the ocean as well as the beach. The straight footpath on the pier with shops is very comfortable for pedestrians and dog walkers. What you should care is to select a day with nice weather.

Teki Chan β€” Google review

Once parking was sorted at Β£3.50 for 4 hours it was time to explore. The shops on the pier were just starting to get ready for Easter. Flashing Lights arcades are mostly cashless, but still worth a visit. The drive east along the coastal road is very relaxing.

malcolm watson β€” Google review

Piers are a great British institution, they would never be built in today’s modern world so we have to maintain, celebrate & enjoy these special places & Llandudno pier is no exception. A great pier - one of the best in the UK.

Scenic Walking Areas

The wide-curving Promenade in Llandudno was built in the 1800s and is today a bustling space for all. It's an accessible space for walking through public paddling pool, sandy beach, grandiose Victorian buildings, to the stonier North Shore Beach.

Such a beautiful place fill with all the old Uk seaside attractions from everyone’s childhood. Great to see all the beautiful sea front buildings so well maintained. Great walk with stunning sights. So much to do and see here, some great views out to see and of the Great Orme and pier too.

Chris Lewis β€” Google review

Short break, really clean prom. Lovely town, lots of shops ( they don't open very early though). Spoilt for choice tea/coffee shops and places to eat. Need good weather to enjoy the place which fortunately we did. Really enjoyed it.

pauline morris β€” Google review

Lovely wide promenade to walk along next to the North Shore Town Beach.Lots of benches to sit on along the prom where you can sit and enjoy the views.

Annie The_voyage β€” Google review

I think this is one of the best proms in the country. It looks stunning from a distance and up close.Only be a few of the hotels are a little past their best but the fully functional pier and punch and Judy show add a sprinkle of nostalgia of a bygone era.

Franco Cargius β€” Google review

Beautiful place, stayed not far from the main town. Clean tidy, dog friendly (although came out of season). Definitely coming back to explore some more

Chellw Brad β€” Google review

This would have to be extremely popular in the height of Summer, a great area to explore located in a picturesque cove. Pretty much how I would envision any great European esplanade, loved the historical buildings lining the shores. Only downside is the lack of public toilets in this area, perhaps we just overlooked them.

Life's Abroad β€” Google review

Very good for walks with friends, family or date with your partner. Night walks are very pleasant after a hot day. It's illuminated, you have benches and the main street is few feet away. Restaurants and takeaways are in a few minutes walking distance. Runners will like it since the sea air cleans your lungs.

Daniel A M β€” Google review

Lovely promenade to walk and very easy access for prams and wheelchairs as well. Mostly a calm place where it’s the sea and you… and the seagulls. Busy on weekends and holidays but the hustle bustle feels good as well

Dr Ipsita Konar β€” Google review

What a beautiful place to visit, had a lovely day.Easy to park the car & easy to get around on my mobility scooter. Even the pier was scooter & dog friendly. Definitely recommend.

Chelle β€” Google review

My wife and I strolled along the very wide and long promenade on a dry but windy and chilly day. Everything looks clean, litter free and graffiti free. Seating all along the rear of the promenade and new sheltered seating area being installed. We couldn't believe the number of wind turbines out in the sea. All the hotel fronts look well maintained. We walked out to the end of the pier and had hot refreshments in the ocean cafe.

Darth Rum69 β€” Google review

Lovely walk. Different from one end to the other. Great place to people watch. Do not eat by the pier end. The seagulls are vicious.

Gerald Lane β€” Google review

Amazing promenade well worth a walk along it will take about 20 minutes or so to get from one end to the other. Great location to forget the world and blow the cobwebs away. There are plenty of eateries just off the front. A peer at one end with lots of amusem*nts for young and old. There are even speed boat rides weather permitting. It’s a definite recommendation from me.

Spike Spike β€” Google review

Love the wide promenade. Easy walking and plenty of shared space for cyclists, wheelchairs etc.If you fancy more of a challenge, the walk up to great Orme has some stunning views.

Stephen C β€” Google review

Amazing place to day out with family. Good food, activities for both kids and adults and beautiful clean blue water. The seagulls are a bit naughty but definitely recommend to everyone to visit. Will go again.

Sifat β€” Google review

It's a nice place to walk hand in hand, with your loved ones, It is nice until many more people get the same idea as you. Then it's crowded and you have to watch your surroundings so you don't bump into people around, rather than watching the view.A free parking slot could be tricky to find, parking machines are available. The mobile signal is very poor, (at least O2).Plenty places to eat, public toilets are there as well, but queues πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.

Pavla Michalcova β€” Google review

Pleasant, relaxing, scenic place anytime, morning, afternoon, evening, night. A continuous, curved bench a quarter mile long accommodates beautiful sunrises, tides, and people watching. Free concerts (donations accepted)!

Gary Ihas β€” Google review

Lovely stroll along the promenade. It's clean and well maintained. Plenty of small shops to buy souvenirs or snacks. Few fairground rides for kids too

Mick Ceebee β€” Google review

We were headed from Manchester to Conway castle and decided to stop to see the Llandudno Promenade. It was absolutely worth it. Stunning views all along the waterfront. I would love to see it again in warmer months.

Matthew Piccirilli β€” Google review

Lovely place to visit. It's very clean and tidy, either a bit of a buzz about the town. We will definitely be back in the summer.

Alan Platts β€” Google review

At almost 2 miles long it's impressively maintained and a lovely place to walk taking in the Ormes Bay / Llandudno Bay, especially at sunset in the summer. Annoyingly popular with cyclists, runners and dog walkers. Can be difficult to park. The Pier at the west-end is a cool place to visit, as is 'The Great Orme' beyond that. The grand, Victorian-style buildings remind you of days gone by where Llandudno was flourishing as a great tourist attraction. Today these buildings have been split into flats and mostly low-end hotels.

Daniel Egan β€” Google review

A beautiful picturesque spot to relax and unwind. We arrived just after sunset, however the view was still stunning and we could see lighting in the far away distance across the sea as the skies were clear. The promenade is beautifully lit up as the evening approaches so visiting day or night is recommended.

History Museums

The National Slate Museum, located in a former Victorian quarry, is an educational and unique living museum with original artifacts showcasing the history of slate mining. The museum features various activities and displays including video clips, a working water wheel, workers' cottages furnished in period decor from 1861 to 1969 when the quarries closed down, and demonstrations.

Thought provoking museum with lots of static exhibits and live displays, giving an insight into the Welsh slate industry and the lives of those it employed. The three miners' cottages, large water wheel and workshops were fascinating to see. While there wasn't the same level of signage and information boards as in some other museums, the extent to which the workshops and equipment had been preserved gave a real sense of the working conditions people would have faced. Parking is paid but entry to the museum is free.

Andrew Thomas β€” Google review

Really interesting place to visit, loved learning about slate mining in Wales. Plenty to see, really enjoyed the trip back in time visiting the miners cottages. The staff were very friendly and informative. The cafe was very good, the soup was delicious. There is a nice gift shop with a reasonable range of items. Entry to the museum is free.

Helen Johnson β€” Google review

Had a great experience here and got a free lesson on slate making. It's much bigger than I expected with friendly staff. Set in brilliant scenery you are certainly guaranteed to learn a lot about this historic industry that has shaped the culture and landscape of Wales so greatly.

Max Hammet-Millay β€” Google review

What a fabulous pace to visit parking is Β£5 for the day. Museum is free and it's fab so much history and things to do. It has a cafe on site a small playground and a gift shop. Outside 2 Minute walk across the way is the lake railway again with small cafe and shop. Β£10.50 adult return journey about hour total .. the views are spectacular out of this world. A lovely day out for families wheelchair friendly.

Rebecca Shrubb β€” Google review

Visited in August 2019, when I had my holiday in Wales. I spent a whole day in Llanberis, taking the railway to the summit and look around in the village. To be honest, it wasn't the best museum I've seen, but at some point was interesting. Even to see tools they used a few decades ago or see the photos and videos, the decorated showrooms, was shocking, pulled me back in time , when people had more difficult life than we have nowadays. Seeing that extremely heavy work and the conditions those people worked in, the almost nothing health and safety really made me feel sad about them. We should appreciate better what we have today: easier jobs and lifestyle.True that we can learn there a lot about mining and good that it is free.

Evalynn B. β€” Google review

This was a nice little surprise… spent a good couple of hours here having a wander around. If you get the chance, sit in on the slate splitting session.. very interesting and very funny too, the experts were quite engaging and full of knowledge πŸ€“πŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ·σ ¬σ ³σ ΏAlso, do not miss out on viewing the water wheel… stunning piece of history 🀩

Brilliant place to visit the surrounding views are amazing. Very interesting insight on what life was like. We loved visiting the houses and the blacksmith demonstration. Loved the smell in some of the work spaces if brought me back to when I would watch my grandad work in his work shed. There's a little play area for the kids and a cafe with baby changing facilities. I can't believe it's free to visit too!

Very good museum. Well laid out/organised. Good displays and videos of slate handling. Original machinery still in place. Nice cafe. Gift shop. Free entry but Β£5 to park - which is v difficult if you yry to use parking app. Take cash! Recommended.

We visited the Llanberis national slate museum recently. It was our second visit to the museum. Its such an interesting place. Upon arrival the staff are very welcoming and offer a free guide leaflet listing all the interesting parts of the museum. You get a real sense of hard the working life was of the slate miners. There is a cafΓ© located on this site. We stopped over for coffee and cakes πŸŽ‚. This museum is well situated close to the centre of Llanberis a short walk πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ from all the local amenities. You must definitely pop in . It's free but please offer a donation to support the upkeep. We had an excellent visit πŸ˜€ πŸ‘πŸ»

Very good place to visit. Loads of things to see and most surprisingly kids did not get bored. They were interested during the movie (How to steal a mountain) and also the slate splitting demonstration, two activities that I would recommend not missing. Free entrance so you can buy something on the cafe shop and souvenir shop. Reasonable prices and good quality on both.

manta florin β€” Google review

Great place. Friendly staff. Good cafΓ©. Really interesting displays. You get to see a live demonstrating of skate cutting and can see everything as it was back in the day in the huge workshops. The big water wheel is impressive as well.

It's a good day out for the family with plenty to do in the museum and in the surrounding area.Entry to the museum is free so you can't argue with that. The staff are nice and friendly and very informative. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

One of the most interesting experience and undervalued things to do in North Wales.Being a free museum, I expected a small and not so attractive museum, but it surprised me and was one of the most interesting experiences. The flow is excellent, the information good, the representation also. It was pretty big and has lots of interest zone.If you are into it you can easily spend half a day in there. From time to time, there are free shows with live demonstrations with cutting slates, making an iron spoon etc.The shop is also very nice and you can find there nice souvenirs (which I didn't see anywhere else)

Ciprian Palaghean β€” Google review

Visited here on a Saturday morning. The museum is free to enter, walked to the museum so unsure on the cost of the parking. It is a very interesting place and has a selection of different things to look at including miners cottages.A short walk from the museum there is the former hospital, unfortunately it was closed during our visit though.

Nice place to visit.Free to enter .parking was Β£5 with machine. Take cash as the card machine was not working so changed 5 pound note from the museum. They do demonstrations through out the day in English and Welsh.we only went for a coffee as we have been before. We park ther to do the trail walks that are around the area .

A very interesting place. With a steam engine that you can take to the end off the line with excellent views of snowdonia. A good photo πŸ“Έ opportunity.

Diane Tippett β€” Google review

Lovely musuem, rich in local history that is free to enter! We particularly enjoyed the slate demonstration and loved the fact that the guy doing this was fourth (I think!) generation of slate miners so had loads of knowledge and hilarious stories to tell. My husband also loved the machine shop and tried to convince me that he needed one of the big lathes (absolutely not!). We spent around three hours here, but would have been longer if it wasn't raining!

Sammie Alco*ck β€” Google review

Fab museum lots to see. Lovely surroundings too. Well laid out museum. Good videos and nice in person demo of how to slice slate and the tools they use. Nice to see the workers terraces rebuilt as they would have through time.Lovely cafe and nice gift shop too. Can't believe its a free museum.Easy to park and lots to see around the museum too like the railway and walks by the water.

The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways is a narrow gauge steam train that runs through 14 miles of rural pasture and forests. The train is highly recommended for tourists because of its beautiful views and waterfalls.

Beautiful trip up 4,000 feet to hotel. Multiple waterfalls. Multiple spectacular mountain cliff, and valley views. Lot of snow still at elevation. Highly recommended!

Kent Bettisworth β€” Google review

Wonderful trip on the old slate mine railway from Porthmadog. They helpfully accommodated our large group, dog and double pram too. Enthusiastic volunteers and nice cafe and information at the stop. Unfortunately it was pouring with rain so we didn’t do the walk!

This railway station is well worth a visit if you’re in the area. The trains are great to see and hear. I’m on a journey to Caernarfon tomorrow and really looking forward to it.The station is very well presented with a lovely cafe offering great views. You can park easily nearby of use public transport

I really enjoyed this spontaneous trip - The Harbourmaster with the Welsh Highland Railway from Porthmadog to Caernarfon. The views were amazing and well worth the trip.I'd definitely visit again if I found myself back in North Wales.Nice and friendly staff.

Paulina Borowiec β€” Google review

What a wonderful experience of a bygone era when steam was the only way to get around. We decided to treat ourselves to the first class Pulman carriage, with afternoon tea on the return journey. All staff were very friendly and helpful, which added to the event. You don’t have to be a rail fanatic to enjoy this experience so I would be happy to recommend it

John Robinson β€” Google review

Sadly the railway does not always operate which I think it should. The railway should always be going to show that Britain and it's industry's do not stop. The stations looked cute and the railway almost looked liked a child's play set scaled up. I like that it can connect isolated areas together as well as being a tourism attraction. I hope to actually ride a train when they once again are in service from April.

RED CAP BOY β€” Google review

Booked a last minute trip on the woodland wanderer and thoroughly enjoyed it. The kids loved riding in the carriage and playing in the park at the cafe when we stopped. Expect a que in the cafe if you want food and drink or take a little picnic with you. Either way we'll worth the trip with the kids.

Damien Hornby β€” Google review

A spontaneuos trip that was an amazing weekend. First class on the Ffestiniog Railway. If deciding whether to do first class or observation carriage they are in the same first class carriage just split. We went for the observation which was about Β£5 each more per person than first class. But we ended up in first class seats as they were more comfortable and more leg room. Observation just more glass but seating not as comfortable as no head rest like there is in first class....personally go with first class over observation.

Brilliant place! We loved every moment. The railway was brilliant. Super good train enthusiastic people. Great lunch available too!

Claire McGurk β€” Google review

Nostalgia, beautiful view and great fun for family day out. Can feel the live history and devotion the driver has towards the train. It brings new experience for someone used to high speed train maglev etc.Deducting one star as I was expecting some just stop oil protest but I see none.

Enjoyed our journey the line from Porthmadog to Tanybwlch but thought the cost of the trip was a bit high. Lovely cafe though and friendly staff.

The most warm and caring staff! so helpful from start to finish! we loved every minute of our woodland wanderer journey! can’t wait to come back for more! Lovely pitstop for delicious tea and scones even! Top dog friendly day out

We got the 10.40am New Year's Day service from here to Beddgelert. It was fantastic! The narrow gauge train means you get great views out of both sides as you travel up the Aber Glaslyn Pass. The volunteers running the service were great - very friendly. It was really good value as well. 100% recommended.

John co*ckburn β€” Google review

We went with my 76 year old mother who has mobility issues, and we had no problems as the staff were more than helpful. I also had our dog, and we thoroughly enjoyed our day, as did our dog. The travel guide is worth purchasing, as it provides a great memory keepsake.

Christopher Treharne β€” Google review

Great ride on a beautiful sunny clear day, could only go up to Clogwyn which is 3/4 way up, as maintenance was being done to the rest of the track. Very cold but then at 2555ft it would be. Great views all around, worth the trip.

John Huckle β€” Google review

Fantastic day out on 16/07/2023, taking in both the Woodland Wanderer to Tan-y-Bwlch in the morning and the Mountain Spirit in the afternoon.Experience was professional throughout as there were signalling issues during the day following the poor weather the previous day but visitor were kept well informed throughout the day and the departure time of the afternoon Mountain Spirit was pushed back to accommodate some of the lost time due to the issues which was a nice touchWould highly recommend giving both trips a go if you're local or visiting the area on holiday

Brilliant. The scenery is stunning. Being on the train is great fun, especially when it goes down the street at the start. A must do when in the area. Wheelchair space available.

Suzanne Dalewicz-kitto β€” Google review

Embarking on the steam train journey through the hills is an experience that seamlessly blends nostalgia, natural beauty, and engineering marvel. As the train chugs along the hills, it treats passengers to breathtaking panoramic views that are nothing short of awe-inspiring. The journey is not just about transportation; it's a gateway to a bygone era, where the rhythmic chugging of the steam engine and the billowing plumes of smoke evoke a sense of wonder and excitement.Great Experience.Recommend πŸ‘ŒπŸ»Location:- Porthmadog (Wales)

An absolutely wonderful experience, to be able to watch the comings and goings of rolling stock and to experience Railway travel as it used to be is an immersing joy. Unlike the hermetically sealed carriages of today the trains operated by the Ffestiniog Railway allow you to connect with the countryside you're travelling through. The locomotives are magnificent and larger than you would imagine for a gage of two feet. I can thoroughly recommend this attraction to all.

John Grant β€” Google review

I would say that this railway and it's scenery are one of the wonders of this world. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking and the condition of the locomotives and rolling stock are phenomenal, especially during an action packed weekend at the Bygones Weekend.

Gregory Moir β€” Google review

Great place thoroughly enjoyed the experience staff were welcoming, friendly and very knowledgeable and approachable my only criticism is the booking fee is quite a lot when you book online but it is really worth doing for anyone who enjoys trains. We did the Victorian journey which was just over 2 hrs. You also get to see the other trains pulling in and leaving whilst you are on the platform which is an added bonus.

Emma Jefferson β€” Google review

Step into a bygone era at Ffestiniog Railway Station. With its Victorian charm and nostalgic steam engines, this Welsh gem offers an enchanting journey through history. A must-visit for travelers seeking a unique and memorable experience.

Forty years ago I wanted to come to the famous Ffestiniog & Whelsh Highland Railway. I must say I was not disappointed. What a wonderful scenic train. The welcome, the cleanliness and the beauty of the equipment, everything is there to make your trip a daydream.Take your time, let yourself be carried away and dream aboard this Pullman car, which is well worth the 70 GBP charged.Ask the volunteers any questions you like, and they'll be happy to answer them.If I can, I'll come back one day to do all the excursions, because it's worth the detour.

We dont the mountain spirit journey and it was fantastic beautiful scenery all the way to the end.

Adam Richardson β€” Google review

It was a great experience. The steam train takes you along some breath taking scenery. I was expecting that there would be some sort of educational radio about the history of the train, about the route, etc. Apart from that it was good

Waterfalls

Located in a charming, wooded area in North Wales, Swallow Falls is a breathtaking waterfall with churning waters that can be reached by walking along a narrow and rocky footpath for 2.5 miles from the Tyn Llwyn car park in Gwydyr.

Last time I was here it was 20 years ago. Sadly the hotel has now been sold to another chain and from what I read it will be reopened soon. Though that doesn’t really matter as the falls are still there and only Β£2 to enter either with contactless or that old fashioned method known as money. The coin machine takes all UK coins πŸ˜‚. Once through the turnstiles. The steps down are quiet steep and uneven in places. If you have anyone with you that may struggle with them. You can wander across the top path and see the main falls from here. It’s just as lovely as ever. It’s not huge but there are benches and seats. It makes a great stop off place to see something interesting on any journey.

SAB photography β€” Google review

One of the finest and must visit Water Falls in the North Wales. The force of the water falls is so high and it's just a treat to the eyes. If you close your eyes for a minute, you can feel and enjoy the nature and trust me it's a make you float in the air. You will go to imaginary world. The sound of air, chipping sound birds, ripples of water will get you the goosebumps. For my eyes entire North Wales is one of the best place in the UK. Everyone should visit atleast once in their life time. Their is a entry ticket of 2 pounds per person. Though they are collecting the entry ticket it's shame that their is no facilities like Toilets, Cafe... They need to provide a basic facility like Toilets. If you are driving a car their is a few parking space available. Also their is a bus station close by. Since i drove the car I'm not sure about the frequency of the bus.

Pavan Kumar KP β€” Google review

Absolutely stunning waterfall, very relaxing to listen to. There is wheelchair access to see the main waterfall which I think is amazing to be inclusive. If you want to explore further down there are a lot of steps to go up and down, and there is railing however it is getting very rusted and will need repair soon. The entry fee was Β£2 which was reasonable considering how well maintained it was. There is very limited parking, especially as the hotel opposite has gone so there is even less parking.

Kelly Ellis-Jones β€” Google review

Beautiful, stunning falls. Few steps, great viewing points. Highly recommend. Β£2 per person. Layby at the top on the main road. Hotel and bar across the road that was being renovated at the time. April 2024.

Angela Rutter β€” Google review

Visited in September 2019. I almost gave up to see the waterfall, because during my 2 weeks holiday almost every day I drove on that road A5, and never had a chance to to stop, as the car park was always extremely busy. To be honest it is not a big car park, but someone goes away, 3 others waiting for that space. It can be easier sometimes to park on the other side of the road where is the Swallow falls hotel/pub with its own parking. But because this is the busiest road of the mountain it's not easy to cross the road. The falls are between the Ugly house and Betws-y-Coed on the very side of the road. Then just 2 days before my holiday ended, one evening I found parking space, so I stopped immediately. It is not a huge attraction or something we spend more than 30 minutes by the way, so it's surprising that the car park is always busy. The entrance is a narrow barred iron gate works with coins, Β£2 per head to get in. I found it very strange, because the waterfall is just next to the road, and seems that it was fenced only for tourists, to get access for money. And as I said, the time we spend there is no more than half an hour but even that is too long. Quite a few steps leads down to different very wet terraces, and it is indeed a lovely waterfall and we can take nice pictures. I can advise to go there early morning or later afternoon/evening, when we can parking easier, and also the terraces are less busy. But be prepared with coins to get in. It is nothing else there, just stairs down to the terraces and back to the gate, I remember 1-2 benches, but that's it.

Evalynn B. β€” Google review

Beautiful place..... the sound of falls is amazing... views are beautifulEntry 2 pounds per person either pay by coins or contact less on the the gates. There is lay-by opposite to swallow hotel for few cars.

Ahsan Shabbir β€” Google review

Stunning. A must see. Well worth the Β£2 entry fee. As well as the viewing point down a few steps, recommend going down the many steps to see the view from lower down. Helpful and pleasant staff member at the gate. All the parking spaces outside were taken so we parked up the road at Cae'n y Coed National Forest which has a free car park and only a five mins walk from Swallow Falls.

Zee N β€” Google review

Lovely falls with safety bars surrounding it . Lots of steps . You will get a beautiful view of the waterfall. not recommend for people with difficulty walking . Beautiful falls, but you have to pay Β£2 for adults and Β£1 for children.car parking is nearby and easily accessible to the falls

binu remanan β€” Google review

I was surprised to find that you had to pay to see the waterfall but once I did I could see it's well looked after and the stress is made safe. You need Β£2 per person or it takes contactless cards. Stunning place to spend a few minutes in nature.

Laura Allco*ck β€” Google review

Entry fee is Β£2 per adult and Β£1 per child under the age of 14. Nice relaxing visit with not too many people around. I also like the fact that the venue was not crowded, so plenty of opportunities to get that perfect Instagram photo.

De Ryc Rr β€” Google review

What an amazing place to come and visit! So beautiful! There is a £2.00 charge to get in but certainly worth it! You can pay by card with contactless. The entry is through a very narrow revolving gate... not so great if you are on the chunkier side!🀷🀣

A β€” Google review

Not recommended for disabled visitors. The site has a turnstile access system and an entrance fee of Β£2 per person. The venue has separate platform viewing levels which are accessible by steep steps. For the best experience, it's recommended to visit the site during or after heavy rainfall to see the waterfalls in full flow. Parking is restricted and the Swallow Falls Hotel was closed due to a major refit and upgrade.

Kevin Evans β€” Google review

Β£2 to get in. You can park on the side of the road. No allocated parking areas. From the entrance, there are only a few steps to the waterfall. It's a must-see ! You can see the main waterfall even if you use a wheelchair. There are about 50 steps to the lower level, but don't miss much if you don't do steps. No toilet. No cafe.

Amanda m β€” Google review

An incredible natural beauty and lovely location. Hidden away and took my breath away, 100% would recommend. Parking available too. However, there is an entry fee of Β£2 which is horrendous as everyone should be able to see a sight like this for free. If you can find a way to sneak in, I don't blame you.

Very beautiful, you can pay by card to get in, wasn't busy. It's dog friendly. You can take dogs with you. It's definitely worth a visit. Apparently, it's best to go after good rainfall, which is what we did.

Emily β€” Google review

Beautiful area , exhilarating falls! We went when it was icy and snowing so had to be extra careful on the steps. This didn't takeaway from the beautiful views though. There are platforms so you can get the best views . It really is good for the soul. There was a charge going through a turnstile but there's facilities to use your card . Will definately go back in different seasons.

Michelle β€” Google review

This waterfall was great. There was still a lot of incoming water, although it was a winter now. Both upper view and lower tier view were outstanding. Going down stairs about 5 minutes. Fir both tier, we spend 15 minutes only.Β£1 per entry using contactless autopay method. No cash excepted. No security guard at entrance

Hock Sing Tan β€” Google review

Parking is on the opposite side of the A5 to the North, about 150 yards. Access is via a coin or card turnstile. This is not wheelchair or limited mobility friendly. The falls are accessed via steep and uneven steps with various viewpoints available. Word of advice: look over the wall when on the A5 pavement to see if there is any water in the river. Don't waste money if there isn't. We were lucky as per the photos.

Simon C β€” Google review

There are no words for how beautiful this place is. Bring some coins with you as there is a turnstile that takes coins. 1 or 2 pound coins work, not sure for smaller ones.

Zip World Fforest, located in North Wales, features Europe's longest zip line and is a highly sought-after attraction. This thrilling experience allows visitors to soar through the sky while taking in breathtaking views of Wales from a unique perspective. The original attraction at Zip World, the zip-line takes you on an exciting journey through Penrhyn Quarry with stunning views of the quarry lake below.

Fantastic time - the mountain coaster was well worth the money, it was bigger than we expected and a really fun experience. We had the double car for an adult and child, the coaster takes itself up the hill then you can control the speed coming down.We also booked the tree nets, the kids really enjoyed these but for the price I think it was a waste of time booking for all the adults in our group, adults would not need a whole hour on them. An adult needs to go on with the children but you can sit and supervise too. However it was good to try them and my kids said they loved them especially the donuts and the slides . We took a picnic to keep cost down , there are picnic benches available to use.

A brilliant place! The Zip Safari, high in the forest canopy is amazing! Stunning views and challenging obstacles, all linked by zip wires. The Tree Hoppers Course is great for smaller kids and the Coaster is good fun.Staff are very professional, ensuring that safety is a priority, but keeping the whole experience fun.Big car park. Reasonable food and drink. Amazing views and a great day out. Would highly recommend, the kids have a great time in a beautiful place.

A must try in UK! You can get 20% off when you bought 2nd facilities. The forest coaster has 3 rides, and if you buy their video they would give you one extra ride, which means you could have 4 rides! For people who did not want to play plummet, go try the Sky ride! So much fun and the view is fascinating!

Had lots of fun, booked for the forest coaster which was very fun; you can slow down and speed up using the levers whenever you want and you get 3 goes each. Also went on the tree hoppers with a younger sibling which was fun for him but also for me as if I'd never been on a zipline before even if it was mainly for younger children. Also your second activity gets a 20% discount if you paid for one that day.

Had a great family experience with our 4 year old. We did the treetop nets, it was perfect for her and lots of fun for all ages. You get an hour on the nets which is perfect amount of time. Really lovely place. We only went on the forest coaster, but even with a 5 and 7 year old there were two other activities we could have booked. Forest Coaster was clearly the busiest activity. Overall really great outdoor activity even in the rain.

Just the best. We only did the toboggan through the forest, although there are other exhilarating activities to do. At first, I was scared at how high the cars went before they rode down, but when I completed the first course, I was excited to go again. You get 3 goes, and it is brilliant because you control your speed, although you only break slightly if you are plunging round the tight corners. My partner didn't hit the breaks once until he got to the end. My boys loved it. 😍

What a wet and miserable day but made totally fun by our couple of hours spent here. The Zip Coaster was good fun, with 3 goes for your money. What a laugh as we challenged each other not to brake at all!Plenty of free parking, and the staff were great.Money well spent and recommended

Fantastic! Whole family had a go on the forest roller coaster which was a lot of fun and something unique in the UK, I think. You get 3 runs down for the price. Well maintained, great forest location. Also did the swing which was fun. Cafe was good, nice and warm.

Came for the Fforest coaster with my husband and three year old son. We all loved it, our son was shouting to go faster! Big thanks to the two guys Jack and Steve. We also enjoyed the pine run, you can purchase one ball for 2.50 or two balls for 4. Which is a lovely souvenir.Definitely returning for the swing! And telling family and friends to try out the coaster.

Lorraine Shields β€” Google review

We specifically visited this location to experience the Fforest Coaster, and it proved to be a worthwhile investment. For a mere Β£25, you will receive three coaster rides. The initial ride serves as an orientation, while the second and third rides offer the opportunity to request an action camera to capture your reactions. Additionally, you have the option to take multiple rides.

Ajay Bali β€” Google review

Absolutely epic experience. We only did the fforest coasters at this site but it was brilliant. Family of 4, for less than Β£100 and it was 100% worth it. Videos of each descent are around Β£8. The staff were friendly, helpful and polite. My only criticism was that we were told to get there 30 mins early… however that was pointless as we were then waiting in a queue for 30 mins. People for our time slot turned up at the exact time and were right behind us but that didn’t take anything away from the experience.

Matthew Barrett β€” Google review

We had a week in Wales with the main intention of doing all the various Zipworld activities. We ended up spending more with them than we did on our cottage for the week! It's expensive but worth it for the unique experiences they offer. Our third and final visit was to the FForest Coaster at Betws-y-Coed. We had only pre-booked the coaster but also did the swing, plummet (twice) and had a second set of goes on the coaster. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed it. The activities were great fun and the staff were all extremely friendly. My daughter initially did plummet by herself and then persuaded me to do a tandem jump with her. I thought the big swing might make me sick (the only ride at theme parks I dislike is the pirate ship) but it turns out the g-force is to intense to think about your stomach at all! The coaster was definitely the main event and we're already looking where we might be able to do another when we visit Canada this summer. After doing the first couple of runs with no brakes (to prove how tough I was), I actually discovered the braking gently just before the corners actually increases the intensity and prevents the auto-braking from kicking in. We also had lunch in the snack-bar and a coffee in the cafe at the bottom. A great day out finished with a lovely walk around Betws-y-Coed afterwards.

A pretty clean beach. It has quiet good parking though get there early as does get busy. It has stones on the top part of the beach, the beautiful soft sand on the shoreline. There are the usual seaside shops with fish and chips. Plus a little train for a tour if your legs are hurting after the shopping. A lovely place to spend the day, weekend or even holiday. Just need the great British weather.

A lovely sandy beach with a nice little town with plenty of places to eat and shops to browse around this really is where the mountains meet the sea! Big spacious car park right on the beach front with plenty of spaces however I can imagine that this still gets very busy in the height of the summer. My only negative to say would be the dog ban on the main area of the beach which takes the best central part of the beach away from dog owners in the summer. There are still dog friendly areas to the right and left of this central area which are still very nice but they can get overcrowded as the space is smaller than the central area.

Dan Richards β€” Google review

A personal favourite - lovely long sandy beach for a nice walk, along a beautiful small town. Great fish and chips nearby as well as plenty of parking as long as you get there early enough. I usually set off from Birmingham around 7-8 am and get here in 2.5 hours.

Great beach nice wide and sandy ideal for kids but sea can soon change.Dogs are forbidden during certain times. We were there to see the lifeboat come out to be launched and coastguard helicopter land so plenty to see.

Beautiful beach no matter the weather, always picturesque. Great place to go for a walk, nice long walkable area. Good access with a massive car park directly opposite, loads of places to eat and drink close by.

C Jason β€” Google review

Amazing beach. Areas for people with dogs and areas dog free. The town is lovely with plenty of shops, but it was the beach itself that is the best bit. Shallow and clean enough for hours of paddling with the kids. Will definitely be returning.

Chris McWilliam β€” Google review

Lovely beach. Very clean and fantastic views. Great place to have a relaxing walk.

Pretty good beach. It wasn't too busy when we went on a Saturday in mid-May. Looked clean, and had pletty of parking and benches to make use of if you didn't want to go onto the sand. The opposite side does have a few eateries, with a few more located just away from the actual beach.

Nayan Patel β€” Google review

Lovely Welsh seaside resort, great for young and old alike. It has 2 main car parks fairly large. Highly recommended for holiday. B&Bs nearby. If you are coming for a day out, I recommend you leave quite early about a 2 -2 1/2 hour drive from West Midlands, depending on where you live. Car parks fill up very quickly on sunny days. Recommended you leave at 7:30am. or earlier if you want a good space. It is pay and display at a machine prices reasonable

We stopped here on a whim after travelling down from Porthmadog through to Aberystwyth. Amazing little place. The beach is really nice, clean, tidy and great for hunting for stones as we did with my son. Tide was out and made a great little costal walk.We then hit the amusem*nts spending Β£40 In total across 3 hours. One of the best RTP I ever encountered in any amusem*nts. 2000 tickets we managed to get Alot of things for my son as these were all reasonably priced.Sizzlers grill I think it was called... amazing food beautiful donuts and so so reasonably priced. I had steak and chips,Mrs had a burger and chips and my son chicken nuggets and chips served in a bucket with a spade. All came with a drink and generous portions, cooked fresh. 4 donuts were our pudding and all for Β£23. Normally food is extortionate at seaside towns but this one wasn't.Thoroughly enjoyed the day. Car parking was pay and display and I think we paid Β£4 for 3 hours. Plenty of spaces. Would definitely return!

Absolutely love everything about coming here., the drive in and out is so gorgeous. The scenery is spectacular.I love the drive so much.. I went mid week and I had virtually an open road., I was so happy.. once you land in Barmouth there is a great little cafe that I forgot the name of but it’s opposite the sea view on a corner sell great soup! And the fish and chip shop oooh so good!Beach is clean, sandy and great for everyone., a real easy day.. stunning scenery, easy parking. 5* road trip

One of the best beaches I've been onto in ages. Perfectly sandy, absolutely beautiful scenery, and nice and spacious for those busy times in the Summer. It takes about 3-5 minutes at least to walk from the promenade down to the water's edge over sand, but it's well worth it.

Caleb β€” Google review

Wow - what a stunning beach!! Beautiful. Expect to pay Β£5.50 for a day's parking. There's not much in the town - a few seaside 'tat' shops, though some of the tea-rooms are worth a visit. Worth a visit for the beach if the weather is good, otherwise....

Scenic Railroads

Bala Lake Railway, also known as Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid, offers a delightful nine-mile round trip through Snowdonia National Park on narrow gauge steam trains. Passengers can enjoy stunning views of Bala Lake and the nearby mountains while riding heritage locomotives. The railway also features a charming station cafe and the opportunity to meet a Welsh engine named Winifred from children's books.

Fantastic experience. Nice little train ride. The southerly station has a coffee shop and toilets etc. but not a lot else in the village. The Bala end has no facilities but it’s only a 10m walk to the village centre if you get your timings right.

Steve Fogg β€” Google review

Festiniog to Porthmadog was a great ride but can cost the earth Β£120 for 2 adults and 2 children. (Dogs are welcome). We did later find out if you apply it's Β£34 per year for adults to ride the heritage railways so look into that. Unfortunately porthmadog was torrential rain when we arrived. It was a great trip overall and I enjoyed it we got to see other steam trains some truly original designs like duel ended with a single boiler very clever. We did also do Bala around the lake which was shorter but very nice

Danielle Jones β€” Google review

We visited Bala Lake and we went on the train we got the return it was well worth it. There is a cafe at the station and you can return on another train if you want to explore or you can go back on the train you were on. The people running the train are doing a great job as the train runs alongside Bala Lake there are plans to expand it.

Carol Hannah β€” Google review

Small stream train run by volunteers that takes you along the lake between Llanuwchllyn and Bala. A scenic route enjoyed at a leisurely pace of a by gone era.We booked single trip tickets online using their very impressive website and walked back. On our return the cafe was approaching closing time but the two young ladies very cheerfully provided us with coffee and toasted sandwiches which were delicious and very welcome. Service with a smile.Very highly recommended for a gentle, nostalgic trip.

What a fantastic little railway. Started the journey at Llanuwchllyn station. Beautiful station. Well look after, friendly staff and parking . On are journey, beautiful scenery and sights. Bala Lake is truly beautiful. On the return journey, are engine drivers where brilliant. Letting people on the footplates for photos and making us laugh. This is a great little railway. Excellent value for money. Friendly staff and beautiful scenery.

Visited: 20/2/24Bala Lake Railway staff were genuinely amazing, they were freindly, very knowledgeable and are were very keen to help and point out things of intrest to a railway enthusiast. The Llanuwchllyn station is well equipped and clean. A well stocked gift shop, clean toilets and most importantly a warm and welcoming cafe. Will re-visit!

Connor Knight β€” Google review

Such a quaint place with lovely staff who even let my children go at the front of the train and the service box. Staff were so kind in the cafe, they didn't force us to buy anything and said we were welcome to shelter from the rain. Beautiful views over Bala lake.

Shamim β€” Google review

Such a lovely railway experience that deserves the publicity. We did a round trip from Llanuwchllyn to Bala. It was Β£15 for an adult return (Β£14 if you buy online), we rocked up with about 5 minutes to spare and bought tickets from a volunteer on the platform with an iPad and a card machine. There's plenty of parking at that end, and the train returns straight away so it's convenient. We visited on a weekday in the May half term holiday and took the first train from Llanuwchllyn, there was plenty of space. We sat in the front carriage, which has a great view of the train. The sides are open so we definitely had a few soot marks by the time we got to Bala! We saw a Honey Buzzard in the trees as we went through a wooded section and saw the RAF training planes fly up the lake too. It was a beautifully scenic visit. We stayed on the train to return as we had already explored Bala. At Llanuwchllyn there are bathrooms, a shop and a cafe which is good for those doing the return journey from Bala. We also visited the heritage centre which has great information and some cool machines and carriages. I'm really glad I went and would recommend it for all the reasons above.

Charlotte Hannam β€” Google review

Amazing little steam railway that takes you along the lake, passing a couple of stations, under bridges and finally coming to a stop and coming back again.Even though it was a bit of a rainy day, off and on, the experience was brilliant. Great for families or those that love the sights and smells of a steam ride. Expect to get covered in a bit of soot from the steam if you sit in the open windowed carriages, but all part of the experience!

Chris C317 β€” Google review

First visit to the railway on Bank Holiday Monday, double bonus as it was a steam gala. Good value for money. Tickets you're recommended to you use the QR code at the station to book, doing this will save you money. All staff on the railway couldn't of done more. Answering all questions and just saying hello to us. Lovely journey along the lake. The museum is worth a look around, look forward to another visit

Duncan Jones β€” Google review

Amazing railway journey with spectacular views of Lake Bala and the surrounding countryside. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, there's a shop and cafe at the station. You can book tickets in advance and even buy tickets for dogs too! There is a 20 minute walk when you get to Bala (Pen-Y-Bont station) but there are plans / work in progress to extend the line into the middle of Bala town. Well worth a visit!

Historical landmark

The Vale of Rheidol Railway is a 12-mile long railway that dates back to the Edwardian era. It offers first-class carriages and an audio tour, taking passengers through hillside woodlands. This is a highly recommended experience for visitors in the area. Passengers can also extend their journey by hiking and trailing in the Devil's Bridge area, with two trails available - a 16-minute trail for train passengers and a more difficult 45-minute trail.

Amazing experience through the heritage railway journey. This is one of the must have on the list to experience when you are in this area. If train is less crowded then you get option to extend the time to hike and trail in the Devil's Bridge area. There are two trails which can be taken, one for train passengers who can take 16 mins of trail. Other is 45 min trail which is difficult to do in 1 hour time given to tourists/passengers. As train was less crowded we were given option to return back through other train (the last service). So talk to the ticket agent at counter. They will help and guide accordingly.

Lovely trip on a steam train to Devils Bridge. Depending on times you can have a few hours at Devils Bridge to visit the falls etc. Or if you don't fancy driving to Aberystwyth go from Devils Bridge, again check times. The train has a 1st class carriage and open and closed carriages. The journey takes about an hour and you meander along a line take has some excellent scenery. I went with my 9yr and 11yr old they both enjoyed it as I did. There is a nice coffee shop/cafe in Devils Bridge where you can chill before your journey back. You can also get to drive a steam train but I don't have much information on that. But a nice day or half day out depending on what you want to do.

Paul McNiffe β€” Google review

Just amazing. Just the smell of smoke, stream and oil. Open carriages and enclosed. Takes about an hour with short stops and other passing locomotives. Travel through a completely unspoilt range of tree lined mountains, following the Rheidol Valley next to rivers and reservoirs. Stop at Devils Bridge for about an hour which is plenty of time for the short walk below the 3 amazing bridges. A snack at one of the numerous places available and back to the train for the downhill trip back.

Clive Jenkins β€” Google review

Lovely day out despite rain showers. Beautiful views and lamb antics were hysterical. Special praise to the young man in the museum, very knowledgeable, interesting and charming.

Ann Philcox β€” Google review

Absolutely astonishing. Me and my partner concluded our trip to west wales with this rail journey in a beautifully restored steam engine and we were in awe of the beautiful scenery we passed through at a leisurely anachronistic pace. This is fun for the entire family undiminished by the weather and which will ignite passions within.

Dominic β€” Google review

If you like historic recreation and preservation, this is an absolute must! From start to finish, an entirely wonderful and enjoyable family experience. Authentic guards dress adds to the day, as does the platform decor and even the lavatories have a 'days gone by' look.Carriages are well preserved and authentic, as proven by the fun, jostling ride they provide.Every member of the staff are enthusiastic and helpful, in every way, making the journey as enjoyable as possible. There are stops along the way, if you want to get off and walk parts of the journey, but the best way is to go all the way to Devils Bridge, where the trip terminates and you can get a good look at the engines. Also at Devils Bridge, is another terrific little railway gift shop, with some smashing stuff for all ages including books, dad's, posters and railway liveried gifts.Another reason to get to Devils Bridge, is the opportunity to see the Red Kite Centre and the lovely Two Hoots cafe, where you can get some super, homemade cakes etc along with hot and cold drinks.

Colin Benson β€” Google review

Lovely heritage railway with some really spectacular views. Both major stations have free car parking and toilet facilities. There are gift shops at both stations. There is a cafe at the Devils Bridge end which offers a selection of sandwiches and light meals and also a varied choice of drinks. This is a reasonably priced day and any money made goes to the railway to cover running costs.

Anthony Bourner β€” Google review

I’ve done this trip about half a dozen times now - it’s about a one-hour trip and a great one for visitors to see some scenery without the hiking or when the weather isn’t the best. - and a great little cafe on the Devil’s Bridge end. The turnaround time makes visiting the Devil’s Falls difficult if you wanted to return on the next train, but there are timetable options depending on the time of year

Ade Jordan β€” Google review

Great authentic historical steam railway, which winds its way over several miles up to Devil's Bridge. A brilliant day out for kids and adults alike, and an important working example of many general aspects of life in the remote mountains and valleys for well over 100 years.

Rob Leith β€” Google review

An amazing day out and well worth booking in advance to make sure you get a seat! We have made many trips to Devils Bridge on the railway and have always enjoyed. Amazing scenery and views along the side of the valley. Trains are kept immaculate and the carriage/compartments too.Staff are very knowledgeable and passionate about the railway and this shows. No trip to Aberystwyth is complete without it, 10/10 would recommend!!

Chris Harris β€” Google review

What a fantastic experience. From the gorgeous station building, and the superb rolling stock and steam locomotives, to the friendly staff- it was outstanding. Then we set off! The views as we climbed up the valley through the trees were nothing short of spectacular.Refreshments at Devil's Bridge before heading back down. There's not really enough time to do the walk round the falls, so we made a separate trip to cover that. A great day out.

Gary Franks β€” Google review

Totally ecstatic and thrilling experience. I would suggest this as a must have itinerary to experience the natural beauty. We took the open coaches so beware of small coal particles flying and sitting all over you and protect your eyes.

Swati Gunjan β€” Google review

Excellent souvenirs and a pleasantly period setting at the station. Train ride was an hour long and the carriages were both enclosed and open. I used both on the trip and would say to be aware that you do get covered with soot in the open carriages and it can get in your eyes. It's all part of the experience. Dog friendly. Only enough time at Devil's Bridge to walk the Punch Bowl route but we had plenty of time to do it AND get a nice coffee and sandwich at the cafe which had some pleasant souvenirs also.

Leon Bateman β€” Google review

The Aberystwyth station appears brand new, but in the style of the golden years of GWR.The staff are unbelievably nice and helpful, and the station shop a delight. The station is worth a visit just to see the toilets. The train journey is everything you could want from a great little train of Wales. At the destination of Devils Bridge there are a few nice walks to see the waterfalls etc, and a nice little cafe to refresh yourself.

john jones β€” Google review

Such a beautiful journey through and above the valley. The journey to devils Bridge was about an hour, the trip back was slightly faster. The views were breathtaking and just amazing. We saw red kites feeding on the ground in the fields, horses, donkeys, sheep (of course) plus lots of remote houses and countless rivers, streams and waterfalls. We chose the open carriage but had lots of soot on us (and in our eyes) on the way to Devils Bridge, but none on the return journey. If I did it again I'd choose the covered carriage on the way to Devils Bridge and the open carriage on the way back for good photos. Definitely worth the money and get on the website and read about the history... fascinating!

Amy Felton β€” Google review

Great train ride. Sat in open carriage, directly behind engine. Occasional soot in the eyes and face but it is a steam engine. Ride takes about an hour to get to Devils Bridge. Turn around is and hour but you don't have to get the same train back. An hour is enough time to quickly explore Devils Bridge or get some food at the train stop or shop over the road. Sat in the penultimate carriage for the return ride, had a nice view of the engine travelling in reverse pulling the carriages.

Phillip Gasson β€” Google review

A delightful way to spend a sunny morning/afternoon/day 😎 The staff are friendly, informative and helpful. The gift shops are so clean and tidy. The engines and carriages are beautifully restored and fantastic, especially the 1st class carriage...something for next time perhaps πŸ€” And as if that wasn't enough, the scenery is breathtaking 😍 If you're visiting the Aberystwyth area, it's a 'must-do' Finally, something I rarely, if ever, mention, the toilets were spotlessly clean and fresh. The whole experience, from start to finish was an absolute joy 😊

Swansea Cymru β€” Google review

Wow!! What an experience! Loved every minute of it. Friendly staff, spectacular views, a ride on a steam train and then the main attraction at Devils Bridge which was exhausting but the kids were still full of energy. Would highly recommend if you can manage just under 800 steep steps but if not then I think the the other attraction, the three bridges is an easier trek. (I was too exhausted to even think about it).

Waterfalls

Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfall, located in the western side of the Berwyn mountain range, is a stunning three-stage waterfall with a total drop of 73 meters. Despite being often mistakenly referred to as Wales' tallest single-drop waterfall, it offers breathtaking views and can be easily accessed via a footpath from the nearby car park. Visitors can also enjoy a tearoom and B&B at its base, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing day trip.

Beautiful place . Lovely location .Amazing views of waterfall .Waterfall is very short distance from car park . Car Park charges Β£5 up-to 8 hours . It’s better to buy some delicious cakes from the tiny little cafe just near the waterfall . If you want a bit of walk just park your car in the nearest area free of cost I think !! We haven’t paid anything & later we saw the actual car park which was payable. The cafe stop serving hot food at 3 in the afternoon but we lucky enough to try cakes and tea there. Carrot cake was so yummy only last one left for us .It’s a beautiful place with some amazing views . Really good place to spend time close to the nature .

shana sharif β€” Google review

This is a truly stunning waterfall, when viewed from the bottom. Plenty of rocks to climb/walk on too. The car park costs at the time of this post Β£5.00 for cars, with a beautiful little, what I took for a cafe/shop there too. I didn’t go into this building though. You can venture to the very top of the waterfall by taking the path on the car park side. Be warned though. At the top, on my visit it was like a bog!! It’s deceiving just how deep that mud is. What looks like any other usual slightly water logged area that you may squelch through is 6-9 inches deep! A stone path, like an alpine path should be put in.

Chris Lewis β€” Google review

Brilliant day out!... stunning viewsBiggest waterfall we have ever seen dogs loved a good run round in the woodland , little cafe & toilets with park park at the bottom of the falls & pathway with the option to view the top of falls if your brave enough. Great day out

KG β€” Google review

Awesome waterfall worth a trip to!Falls are free (although signs of some barriers erected that may mean future fees). Parking is paid and has endless signs saying strict enforcement (not too welcoming). We parked in an area just before the official parking which was free and not blocking passing places. The walk itself is very short to reach the falls but I think there’s a few extra routes if you’d like to go further. The road to here is somewhat narrow with passing places but if you are used to countryside roads and able to take it slow and reverse when needed it is no problem.

Seb May β€” Google review

Lovely place to visit. Be aware that the road to the waterfall is single track with passing places but definitely worth the drive when you arrive there. Parking cost Β£5 which I found a little steep and the toilets cost 40p. There is a tea room but I didn't visit so not sure if it's any good.

Tom Parry β€” Google review

Beautiful location (on a sunny day!) short hike up to top (approx. 1.25km and 120m ascent), though can walk easily to the bottom.Simple tea room at bottom with view of waterfall.Parking is Β£5 by tearoom though if you need a pee it's 40p... cash! You can park on the road about 500m away but I really don't recommend it as it is single track road and you can't really turn round as some cars were finding as we left.

Phil T473 β€” Google review

Absolutely beautiful walk to the waterfall. Not too strenuous but probably not for the those who have difficulty walking far and on uneven surfaces. The carpark had plenty of spaces but would advise to come early as it gets full pretty quick. Be careful of the narrow route in and out when we left it caused a tailback and a lot of negotiating to get single vehicles to safely pass in a sensible manner. Bring a picnic as its a lovely spot. Lots of breathtaking scenery.

Yazz β€” Google review

Wow what a wonderful experience. This place is magical. Much better than I anticipated. Yes there are negatives, the roads leading to the falls are narrow and people drive too quickly on these roads. The car park is £5 no matter how long you stay , but closes at 5pm with no use allowed after. The toilets are chargeable. But this is still worth a visit, We parked just before the official chargeable car park which was free. Just be considerate to other drives. From there the falls were only a 10min walk or shorter from the main car park. Please be aware the bedrock around the falls is predominantly slate and can be quite slippery especially when wet. Which it is probably 90% of the time from either rain or people paddling. Enjoy your visit, take a camera, take a towel, take some grippy shoes, if you brave maybe even wear your swimmies under you clothes. Ready for a quick dip in the bracing water. But most of all take home a memory of this stunning place.❀️

Mark Burton β€” Google review

Parking quite expensive they charge Β£5 regardless of how long your staying so if you just want a quick wander to the waterfall like we did then Β£5 is alot for half hour.It was quite busy for a weekday too. The road up is quite narrow. There is a nice little homely cafe at the top where you park.

Alana Leeks β€” Google review

Beautiful waterfall with forest walks, great for dogs and active kids. Nice tea room/cafe on site. The road leading to it can be a pain if its busy as its a single track road with passing places for approx 5 miles, so as long as drivers are courteous and careful then it's fine.

Michaela Everall β€” Google review

Lovely far reaching walk around the falls area as many paths to explore if you wish to explore the area further.Cafe caught us out as only accepted cash...so worth knowing. We had a nice visit on a sunny day. I should imagine it would get busy at peak times of year around the main attraction area.

Lorraine Jones β€” Google review

Absolutely stunning waterfall like nothing I've seen before in the UK. I'd recommend arriving early for parking and because of less people, making it a better experience. I walked to the top (the longer route) and the views were outstanding. Only down side one single lane in one single lane out can't imagine what that must be like on a busy day. There are lots of passing places on route though. There is a cafe and toilets on site (50p coin to use) parking costs Β£5 but it said Β£10 online.

S Edwards β€” Google review

A beautiful waterfall to visit in Wales, well worth the climb to the top! It was £5 to park but free to enter, loads of parking on site. The drive in can be very techarous so caution is advised! It was very busy on the public Bank Holiday. There are two choices to climb to reach the top of the mountain, a steep quicker trail or a slow easier climb. It was an hours climb but beautiful views at the top with lots of space to explore 🌲🏴󠁧󠁒󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Rebecca Harris β€” Google review

Fantastic area to walk in. Once you are away from the falls themselves, you'll largely have the place to yourself. Although we did go in January, not the most popular month for casual walkers! We parked at the falls and walked up Cadair Berwyn. Beautiful scenery and peace and quiet. The falls themselves are lovely. You need to walk to the top though to fully appreciate them. Cafe at the bottom was charming, and the hot chocolate after our walk hit the spot! Assume summer will be a little busier.

Stuart Bray β€” Google review

View from the top of the falls is defo something you have to see. Takes about an hour to get to the top as it’s fairly steep and alot to view and see on the way up, taking pictures etc little pit stops! There are 2 paths to get up, 1 is extremely challenging as it’s cut from the rocks and the steps are sometimes extremely high the other of a steep path criss crossing the face of the mountain. Lots of running water coming down the paths too. Wear suitable footwear and clothing you don’t mind getting muddy in. Cafe great selling hot and cold drinks and homemade cakes. You must park in the car park provided which takes cash or card and costs Β£5 till 5pm when the gate closes. Do not park on the road leading to as you will be fined Β£70.

Rachel Dayman β€” Google review

An awesome waterfall, definitely worth five stars. You'll gasp when you take in this spectacular natural picture postcard. It truly is awe inspiring. Now the drive is a different story, let me add though you are going to see some magnificent backdrops that will have you pulling over and taking those forever memories with your cameras. A huge majority of the road you'll be driving is single track, there are many passing points but if anything like our journey you will be squeezed and probably the odd occasion forced to reverse back down the windy lanes so it's best your passenger is your worthy co-pilot and obviously be patient. We came across at least one boy racer and a local tractor driver so after a tricky reverse around a very problematic bend we finally carried on with our journey. I'm sure there may be easier routes available but I didn't plan that far ahead and honestly once we arrived it was definitely worth the bit of stress caused. Warning whilst there in the middle of nowhere you'll need 50p for the public convenience and Β£5 for the parking. You can park for free a short distance away but I'd have only risked parking there in a 4x4 but that's entirely up to you obviously. However you get there you will absolutely love the view. Make sure your camera is fully charged because you'll definitely be taking pics.

Lee Wright β€” Google review

The highest waterfall in Wales and England. It's best appreciated when in full flow, it can dry up to a trickle in the drier months. There's only a little carpark at the cafe.Good walks around the area.

John Jones β€” Google review

Great day out here with the kids, walked up to the top of the waterfall for some great views, then back down into the little cafe for a hot chocolate and some cake 😎 carpark is £5 all day, be sure to take 50ps with you for the toilets.

Absolutely marvelous. One of the most beautiful waterfalls I've seen.Easy to reach there but the way is slightly narrow. There are passing places but beware of the oncoming vehicles. Make sure to carry an extra pair of clothes as the water is not too deep and it's easy to get a dip in the water. Though slightly cold water, it's absolutely worthy of getting in. The main car park closes at 5 but the waterfall is open almost till night or even 24hrs. Park about 100-150mtrs away from the parking lot, there is a small car park that is free of cost but not enough space for more than 5-6 cars. We went there late at around 16:30 and stayed up till 7 and we spent all the time at the base of the waterfall. The path has a sign that navigates you to the top and to the base. When you are at the base, u can cross the bridge and go to the other side which gives you the best views of the falls. U can see the waterfalls slightly away as well, even when you are away from the parking lot. Kids need to be careful though, they can be fine until the bridge but anything near the falls can be slightly slippery. Absolutely stunning views and a place to be. Just loved it.

Devil's Bridge Waterfalls is a breathtaking natural wonder featuring three bridges built over the River Mynach as it cascades 300 feet into the River Rheidol below. According to folklore, the first bridge was constructed by the Devil himself. The site offers stunning viewpoints of the immense valley and well-maintained trails for visitors to explore. While some parts of the trail may be steep, it provides an opportunity to witness nature's raw power in action.

Brilliant experience at Devils Falls. Stunning place to go and see. Cost about Β£11 for a family of 5 (although 2 kids were under 5) It's steep in places so needs a good level of mobility to get around it. Wear decent shoes also. Will definitely come back.

Darren Charles β€” Google review

What a wonderful experience. The staff were absolutely brilliant. We definitely aren't the fittest but gave the long trail a go and I'm so pleased we did it. There's plenty of opportunities to rest and catch you breath and take in the amazing views. Just take your time place your feet safely and you may surprise yourself.

Sarah Taylor β€” Google review

An absolutely awesome place to visit. Lots of history and interesting facts about this place. Can be a bit tricky walking down and back up again so definitely wear good shoes / boots etc. The sound of the waterfalls is amazing and many of the views are absolutely breathtaking. Well worth a visit.

Gareth Bowen β€” Google review

Great place to visit. The bridge itself is OK but the walk to the falls is much better. The 100 steps almost vertically down was a bit daunting, but the views made up for it. Highly recommended.

Karl Murdoch β€” Google review

We went to the punch bowl side, and it was worth the slightly precarious walk down - make sure you take your time and hold on to the rail or someone as you go down. The noise was amazing when we reached the bottom - we had some rain, so it was running fast and high, and it was roaring its way down.I would highly recommend going and there is a car park just up the road as well as an ice cream shop which also sells hot and cold drinks

Ellen Clark β€” Google review

Entry fee is reasonable, the views are incredible. The attached black and white photos were shot on 35mm film, well worth the hike. This is a fairly demanding trip, especially for those with a love for cake and those who have recently quit smoking, (yes I am describing myself).

Chris Farmer β€” Google review

Lovely visit and well worth the Β£4 per adult! Gorgeous gorge with a beautiful waterfall! The climb is definitely a bit steep in places but even my relatively unfit self managed it! There are handrails all along too

Niki Y β€” Google review

Although not a long walk Definitely a challenging walk lots of inclines...very steep and narrow steps, but Definitely worth it. beautiful waterfall. We paid Β£4 per adult to enter and Β£3 per child. My kids managed but if your children aren't walkers then definitely avoid ,maybe take the other route .

N S β€” Google review

It was a beautiful day out. The walk down to the falls itself was lovely, though, at one point, there is a Jacobs Ladder area, but if you just walk down slowly, you will be fine. I would not recommend the walk in the rain though.

B Everett β€” Google review

Despite a drizzly day we had a wonderful time. You’re sheltered most of the time around. The lady selling tickets was very helpful and knowledgeable. There are lots (and I mean lots) of steps mostly uneven and at different heights, so be prepared. And best off all there’s a pub at the end.

Lee Hackett β€” Google review

Amazing waterfall with lots of places to stop and take in the view and beautiful energy. It is a steep climb both up and down, however even after what felt like a workout it was worth the trek down.My only wish would be to have gotten a bit nearer, with this waterfall that just isn't possible.Well worth a visit and quite spectacular, the ultimate power of nature.

Nicola Whitley β€” Google review

Yes yes yes! Visit here! Its superb. But, only do so IF you’re sure-footed and don’t mind some very steep steps (I mean…VERY)Β£4 for the main falls is a great walk and well worth it. It’s stunning and well maintained. You get to see the amazing three bridges (not amazingly well/from the best angle but still) and then have several viewpoints over the immense valley. It’s great. The waterfalls are a sublime example of the forces of nature doing what they do. It’s stunning. Please do heed my words though that the steps are steep…some are literally 1ft down.Enjoy πŸ™‚

Al β€” Google review

I think we picked a great day to visit after a downpour the previous night and morning. The three waterfalls were loud and stunning. The trails are really steep and wet so ensure you have good footwear with good grip. There are two trails but we only did the longer one which was worth the walk! The whole visit here took us about 2 hours and that included stopping for a coffee at the station a short walk up the road.

Andrew Yardley β€” Google review

Nice little trip out if you want some time with nature and get you moving and steps up. We paid Β£2 each to go to one side of the bridge which was an easy up and down to the fall. Well worth seeing the power of the water. And then paid Β£4 each to go to the main falls.Plenty of bench’s and stops along the way. So can take it at your own pace. The dog found it fine and steps where ok for him! Nice to have a gin n snack on the other side at the pub !

Nicola Osbon (Nikki) β€” Google review

Loved this place, the 3 bridges waterfalls were amazing. It takes about 50 minutes to complete the route down to the bottom and back up and it's very steep and uneven but worth it if you're fit enough. We did the Devil's Punch bowl after and that was worth seeing too.

John Bates β€” Google review

A fabulous walk but not for the faint-hearted. Stunning views of the falls and across the valley. There are plenty of viewpoints to stop at and take pictures. Make sure you wear sturdy footwear for the muddy/rocky paths and especially for the infamous Jacob's Ladder (100 almost vertical steps down to the bottom bridge). If you like a good walk that gets the heart and lungs going, pay a visit to Devil's Bridge - it won't disappoint.

Katie Brook β€” Google review

A challenging but beautiful walk to see the waterfalls and 3 bridges. Well worth the effort, wear really good footwear, as in places the steps are cut in the ground. There were a few wet places on route, even though it hasn't rained for 3 days and 25 degree heat, we guess it may be slippy in wet weather.

Vivien Pascoe β€” Google review

We visited today- it was raining quite heavy, but we still had a great time! This place is stunning- the climb down is not for the faint hearted, those who are uncomfortable with heights or physically challenged. It’s uneven, steep, very close to the edge most of the time, but breathtaking, it’s SO worth it!I have tried to show some examples in my photos of what the path is like, but the photos don’t do the severity of the steepness justice! Sturdy shoes or boots are a must- it was really wet and slippery when we went today, but this required a good sole/grip even in the dry.The Devils Bridge falls walk took us 45mins (it was lashing down and we didn’t spend long at the various view points) it cost Β£11 for 1 adult and 2 children (the car parking is free though so I took that into consideration for the cost)If you have never done it- it’s definitely worth it- but I don’t personally feel we would return now we have done it.The additional cost of Β£2pp to enter the Punch Bowl is a little kick in the teeth- and it’s 10 mins max round the little loop to view the start of the water fall- this was disappointing. The staff were lovely- The tea and cake in the little cafe/gift shop were delicious and very reasonably priced. We are glad to have done it, and you won’t regret it, but it’s not a day’s activity.

Jenny Routley β€” Google review

We were so impressed by the views. My mum is disabled and did the long walk. The stairs leading to the old bridge is NOT disability friendly!!! Uneven and narrow. The customer service was amazing! Β£18. Something for 2 adults and 3 kids. It's reasonably priced. I loved every bit of it.

Courtney Williams β€” Google review

Lovely walk (if you don't mind the climb). Suitable footwear is a must (walking boots) and definitely worth the visit!

Llinos Jones β€” Google review

Nice walk down to the bottom of the waterfall. Some parts are very uneven and slippery underfoot, especially when wet. Once at the bottom there is a nice view of the waterfall. Prepare yourself for the walk (Climb) back to the top as very steep.

Chris M β€” Google review

This was a great place. The waterfall is fantastic to see, along with the bridge. There’s also explanation boards along the way that go through the history of the place. It’s unfortunate that the gift shop and cafe wasn’t open, but apart from that we had a great time and I’d recommend it.

John β€” Google review

I’m not often taken aback by nature but this was incredible. Β£4 very well spent and you can tap your card/Apple pay to get in. Be careful on the bridge!

Castle

A historic castle located in Powis, Wales, now under the care of National Trust offers visitors a glimpse into early modern architecture and art. Built by Welsh prince Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn in the 13th century, the castle underwent a major renovation into Renaissance style during the 17th century. Visitors can explore an impressive collection of artworks and artefacts that include Italian busts from the Seventeenth Century and a Bellotto masterpiece.

One of my favourite National Trust properties. The gardens are amazing, the views are incredible and the castle history is fascinating. It is nice to go again and again and watch how the gardens change over the seasons. Had a lovely jam and cream scone sat in the sunny courtyard. I always find that the staff are very friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a visit.

Mark Robert β€” Google review

Brilliant Day out with lots to see. This is especially good if you are a National Trust member otherwise you will have to pay the entry costs. The Gardens are the main attraction especially on a dry day. However there are lots more to see in the castle so also a good day out if it's raining

Joe Upsall β€” Google review

I just loved this place. It's beautiful and large area if you like walks. Castle looks stunning when you get down on the grounds. Well view from castle is equally gorgeous too.May need more benches added as it's such a huge area that people do get tired and keep looking to seat somewhere. I saw many elderly people at some places waiting to seat.I saw people eating picnics so I think its allowed to have a picnic. Specially on the bigger ground you can just seat and relax and have your time. There are picnic benches before entering the castle. Pictures are added.

S S β€” Google review

If you are in Central Wales then I would recommend a visit. The castle is historically interesting with some superb views across the valley. However, the icing on the cake is the garden which is magnificent. If you like topiary then the main hedges are something to behold and the rose gardens are glorious. Thoroughly recommended.

Robert Kitt β€” Google review

Picked the perfect day weather-wise, a beautifully crisp winter’s day which made for the perfect photo opportunities for such a lovely National Trust site. The tour guides were great and very knowledgeable taking us around the house pointing out fascinating little details in every room and hall.Highly recommended for the house and for its beautiful grounds 😊

Marcus Dalton β€” Google review

Lovely grounds. Walking through the garden was nice and cool for such a warm day. The castle was outstanding. Lots of painted walls, beautiful state rooms and a very impressive bird collection. What a gem. Be aware dogs are very limited to where they can go. Might be best to do this one without them. Gardens are wheelchair accessible.

Marie Brown β€” Google review

Fantastic castle and grounds. Great place to spend a few hours. Came for Easter egg-hunt and trail. Volunteers very helpful and informative. Loved the gardens , beautiful flowers and sculpted hedges and trees. Lots of different areas to explore.

Hemant Mistry β€” Google review

Visited here during half term, they had a pumpkin trail around the garden. Plenty of fun/scary Halloween surprises around the trail. Went in the castle which was very nice. Yes,it is kept quite dark but that's to protect all the wonderful fabrics/tapestries and artwork. So many rooms you can go in really gives a scale of the building. Enjoyed our visit.

Philippa Millard β€” Google review

The most beautiful well cared for garden we have see in Wales. Highly unusual mix of specimen plants. Fabulous borders. Important plants labeled. The living quarter murals everywhere were stunning. Loved Mary Queen of Scott's rosary and the carriage.

Robin Fischer β€” Google review

Magnificent! Such a great experience visiting Powis Castle. We went there in the afternoon, so we missed the last entry to the castle itself as it closed at 15:30. But the staff were so kind and helpful to allow us to visit the Museum. The garden is so beautiful and well maintained. They have EV and accessible parking areas. Whilst wheelchair users are not able to access the castle due to its steps, they can definitely access the whole garden. If you're lucky, you can also see deers and lambs.Definitely recommend this to all our families and friends.

Erny Feberina β€” Google review

Just wow! The gardens are immaculate! One of the best we've seen. We arrived at 10am Saturday, spent over two hours here exploring. We spent 15mins in the castle, far too crowded and dark. There's plenty of parking at the rear of the castle, it's a one way in and out of the estate and very helpful parking staff to ensure spaces maximised. You show your membership card or pay at the welcome 'hut' by the car park then just show receipts to enter. There are quite a few slopes and steps to contend with so bear that in mind. There are two cafes, one just inside the castle courtyard on the left with some outdoor seating. Or head down to the very bottom of the garden and find another there, with toilets. You're likely to be joined by one of the resident peaco*cks on the lookout for crumbs! There's also a really well equipped playing field at the bottom right of the gardens, with various sports equipment for kids to play with their families. It was very well used and ensures kids had something to do while adults could enjoy the gardens.

H W β€” Google review

Cool! nice castle, a very well-kept garden that takes you back to times that rejuvenate your spirit and body, the location in the nature center makes this place simply great. Underneath the castle is a place where you can play various games with your family. 16:30 closing time, I recommend it

Jakub Olszewski β€” Google review

Superb castle set in glorious countryside.Fantastic well kept gardens to have a picnic. You can spend hours here. The only gripe is no access to the old kitchens since COVID, I think due to the lack of volunteers to manage the area. The cafe is about right for prices of coffee etc but nearly Β£4.00 for a slice of cake is a bit naughty - just like any coffee house - I won't pay it. The cream tea was lovely and priced about right.

antony owen β€” Google review

Excellent place to visit with large gardens, a castle and museum to enjoy. The views over the valley are stunning (we were very lucky with some brilliant weather) and the plants that were starting to bloom were excellent (if you are interested in gardens). The route to the fountain at the lower tier of the garden is via steps or a flat path, so accessible for all. Seeing everything definitely got our 10k steps in.

Mark Oliver β€” Google review

This is an absolutely fantastic place, The architecture, the beauty of the place and the gardens are absolutely stunning. The size of the place! It's huge and the grounds are extensive! We had an amazing day at a very reasonable price. The only downside was that we ate in the main cafe which was a very big disappointment. The food had to be sent back several times and they'd even missed bringing us another dish. (That wasn't to dampen the beauty of the place though.

John Redhead β€” Google review

Fabulous castle with stunning gardens. Spent a lovely few sunny hours strolling around the gardens before enetering the castle. Was impressed with how much of the castle there is to see. The volunteers were friendly with lots of interesting nuggets of information also. Would highly recommend a visit here.

Hannah Shackleton β€” Google review

Amazing paints and a marble table I'd loved to have grabbed back home. The car park, free, is big but could be more effective if monitored as most of guests would park either in the middle or too far from other cars.2 museums and 1 amazing garden, if lucky, guided by talkative peaco*cks.

Mathieu Choux β€” Google review

What a beautiful place to come and see. Although it was quite cloudy and drizzly, the views were still stunning. The gardens are the best kept I have ever seen at a NT property. Faultless, beautiful, lush, colourful, clean, and weed free. Total respect and thanks for the team of gardeners that must work tirelessly to keep the gardens in such outstanding conditions.Inside the castle, you are not permitted to take photos. The rooms are quite dark, but there is so much to protect from the sunlight. The painted walls and ceilings are breathtaking. There was so much to look at, and the volunteers were very knowledgeable when questions were asked.I could write so much more, but honestly, you just need to visit to see for yourself!

Lisa Langton β€” Google review

Beautiful castle and Stunning gardens set within a magnificent landscape. The gardens I found particularly impressive, especially the yew topiary. The guides and staff were great-friendly,approachable and helpful.Plenty of parking with an uphill walk to get to the property. Many thanks for a lovely day.

Phil Hughes β€” Google review

One of the best, if not the best National Trust gardens we have visited. We had a glorious day, weather was great and we could take our dogs around the extensive gardens on leads which was great. Plenty of parking and picnic areas plus good facilities and cafΓ©. The castle visit was interesting however the gardens and landscape was simply the best. So impressive and only 7 full time gardeners, amazing job.

Lisa Rollins β€” Google review

Another lovely National Trust site, with the most amazing gardens! The work that must go into the garden maintenance is amazing, they are absolutely stunning. We visited in the autumn, just as the trees were changing colour - would highly recommend this time of year for those interested in photography.Very clearly signposted, and ample parking available. All the staff we spoke to were helpful and happy.Dog friendly site, which is always a bonus! Just be mindful that there are peaco*cks and peahens wandering around the grounds and courtyard areas.Lovely cafe on site, with a smaller tearoom available on the walk around the garden. Will definitely be returning!

Niki Culkin β€” Google review

Beautiful setting. The weather helped. Guides I room very engaging if you take time to talk to them. Makes visit so much more enjoyable when you know the history. Hopeful we will go back again someday. We were told May is a good time to go as flower displays in gardens at their best.

Kathryn Hamling β€” Google review

Majestic castle and gardens. Well worth a visit on a sunny day, to enjoy the grounds and woodland walks. The rooms inside the castle are decorated and furnished as if time stood still and give a good idea of how the gentry lived.A must for anyone interested in history.Free parking, plus a cafe, even if you just want a relaxing break.

Roger Handco*ck β€” Google review

National Trust Castle with a fabulous house with ornate carpentry and pictures everywhere. We went in mid January so not many flowers in the huge grounds so we will have to return in the summer.Nice cafe reasonably priced and knowledgeable guides in most rooms that shared interesting facts about the history of the artifacts in each room.

John Levell β€” Google review

Absolutely outstanding they must visit in the summer days. The gardens are amazing. The views and history is out of this world and it’s definitely one of the best castles to visit in the country. Highly recommended.

Liam Butt β€” Google review

A truly amazing day out, you could spend hours here, from the lovely kept gardens to the internal tour of the castle. You can't take photos on the inside tour but some of the rooms are really amazing the intricate details of the art and rooms is just truly amazing. The museum at the end showing all the armaments and memorial items is awesome. The roaming peaco*cks were brill. A brilliant piece of national trust land. The volunteers were so polite and knowledgeable on the tour

Tom Jackson β€” Google review

This is a super place for a visit. The gardens are extensive and well managed with far-reaching views in places. The house is magnificent but there a limited number of rooms open.I would imagine that this is a difficult place to negotiate in a wheelchair as there are many levels. We did see wheelchair users so it is possible. The usual NT facilities on-site, the cafe got very busy. You cannot book a time slot at this site and on bank holidays/weekends/fine days it fills very early. We arrived at 1230 the day previous to our visit and it was closed! The car park was full and there was a 30 car queue inside the gates. The moral being, get there early!

Ian Coghlan β€” Google review

A castle with a great amount of history and stories from the owners connection with India!!! There are a lot of things on display and very informative volunteers!! We will like to visit again. The gardens are amazing 😍especially the peaco*ck 🦚

Yamini Limaye β€” Google review

Absolutely beautiful location, peaco*cks in the courtyard that were happy for you to get close to take photographs. We counted about 6 or 7 of them, male and female. The castle gardens were absolutely stunning! There were red deer roaming the grounds. We had the guided tour of the building itself. The guides were very well presented with great people skills and were extremely knowledgeable about the history of powys Castle. Incredible paintings in most of the rooms and the grand staircase (not able to climb the stairs for safety reasons). But we visited both the bottom and the top of the stairway. Back to the paintings, each room tells a story, lots and lots of paintings of God's and legends. Very very interesting place with stunning artwork and craftsmanship everywhere you look. Highly recommended place to visit

Andrew Walker β€” Google review

This is a stately home with a difference. Parts of it are 'castley', parts Elizabeth's bling, parts Grand Tour and the final ingredient Edwardian comfort. It was a castle and still looks like one. It is quite small but choc full of treasures. It also holds the Clive of India museum and marvellous Gardens in a semi modern style. On top are the compulsory NT cafe, shop and second hand books. If you are a NT member it's a good deal, despite at least Β£10 for a sandwich lunch. If not, it's a costly day out for a family.

Mike Sweeting β€” Google review

Lovely castle lot's of rooms to see all well furnished, some a little dim but you have to understand that it's to preserve the fabrics from sunlight, beautiful gardens to walk around with lovely views

Kathy Walsh. β€” Google review

Another fantastic National Trust site worth visiting, especially if you are in central Wales. The castle and gardens are well maintained with beautiful topiary and hedges. We visited on a moderately sunny day, which certainly helps in appreciating the beauty of the site a little more. The Castle itself has a lot of artifacts and the tour is worth your time, however you cannot take pictures inside the castle.

What a spot. We stopped here on our way back to Bristol from Snowdonia. Will definitely be back with the dog and there’s great walks around the reservoirs

Catherine Heather β€” Google review

Fabulous place to visit, super friendly staff in the cafe and shop and a lovely welcoming atmosphere. The reservoir is outstanding, we were there when there was snow on the ground and it was bone chillingly cold but it was worth navigating the steps for the view from the top. Going down was challenging given the conditions and the crossing the bridge saw my husband and I doing an impression of Torville and Dean given it was thick ice and there was no salt down so care had to be taken. The walks were lovely and well sign posted. We cut our visit short due to the cold but will most certainly be back in the spring to see more of this incredible place.

Quite a few reservoirs in a distance of a few miles. Surrounded by the beautiful Welsh nature. A great choice for a day trip driving through the mid Welsh countryside. The forests, the waters, the animals (which you will sometimes literally find walking down the roads) are simply great. Highly recommended. (PS: The dams won't always have the waters running down them, making the view somewhat less spectacular)

parking is easy the elan valley goes on for miles means you have a long walk which ever way you choose to go you can see the dam and the views of the mountains and hills in the distance make it picturesque so bring your camera and spare battery well worth a visit

National Trust - Dolaucothi offers a unique experience with its Roman gold mines, providing guided underground tours and the opportunity for hands-on gold panning. The site is dog-friendly and offers a variety of tours, including those focused on Roman history. Visitors can explore the upper levels of the mine and learn about mining from passionate and knowledgeable staff. Additionally, the surrounding area offers lovely walks in a tranquil natural setting, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

It was a proper wet and snowy day so we decided to book on the mine tour. We were tempted by the Showcaves but they were Β£20 pp, whereas the mines were free for NT Members. They even have a dog friendly tour which was sadly fully booked but the rain made it so the dogs were okay in the car.Nevil was a great tour guide, we found it super interesting and very fun! Lovely site, very rural site! Lovely space, the history is well presented both on the tour by the guide and on the information boards.Recommend going, though what you see inside the mine is very limited. Lovely walk, beautiful views...quite a number of steps up so bear that in mind, some steps but more of a slope going down. A few in our tour of 11 people used walking poles to help.Nice visitors lounge area with activity table for small children and good indoor space for those who perhaps would find the walk to the mine a bit too difficult.Toilet facilities available and clean, but no cafe, small souvenirs available in the entrance building.Gold panning fun, but sadly no real gold found! πŸ˜‚

Interesting and fun. We spent an hour panning for gold. I can now understand the term "Gold Fever"! Beautiful area. Picnic tables, no cafe. Wear proper footwear (enclosed, no sandals) and be prepared for hiking up and downhill.

Tana Cramp β€” Google review

We visited Dolaucothi one sunny afternoon in May, after finding it on the National Trust app. The entry process was easy, but it is highly recommended to pre-book in advance as groups are only small and they only run a limited number of tours each day they are open. The site itself is very well kept, with lots of nicely displayed information and it also included a small, well organised museum. After we were fitted with our hardhats, we started on the tour exploring the history of gold mining in the local area. The tour was around 1 hour, and it was truly fascinating. As well as finding out all about the history of the area dating all the way back to the Romans, you were able to venture into the mine and stand where they had once mined for gold centuries ago.The tour guide was very knowledgeable, and overall, the entire experience was very good value. If you’re looking for something a little unusual to do over a weekend, you shouldn’t miss a trip to Dolaucothi.

Joel Pagett β€” Google review

Interesting visit with very knowledgeable guide. Different tours about separate parts of the history. We went for the Roman one. We will back for another tour the next time we are up.

Paul Tisserant β€” Google review

If you’re into Roman history then Dolaucothi mine is well worth a visit but be sure to book. The mine is run by the National Trust and the tours are free for members. The Roman tour takes you from the visitors centre (which itself is situated in a massive Roman open cast mine) up to the top of the hill where there is evidence of Roman cast and drift mining. The staff are very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. This is a great experience for the young aspiring archaeologists (children 8 to 80) although the terrain isn’t suitable for those with mobility issues. There are other tours for those unable to tackle the inclines..Dolaucothi really fires the imagination.

Warren Sheridan β€” Google review

Walked the red estate route and whole family enjoyed it! Great views and easy to follow. Sign to trig point is just that, you need to retrace your steps back to the main trail. Parts of the route can be a bit steep/muddy, but overall a great walk.

Luke Davidson β€” Google review

We were having quite a bad rainy day, didn't find what we wanted to find, well it wasn't a great day.We booked a guided tour to the mine because we weren't far and wanted to give it a try. And boy did it be worth it.Nevil was as fun as instructive, we learnt many things about mining which we didn't know, and we went to explore the upper levels of the mine. He's passionate just like every National Trust staff we met, and it was a really good experience !

Mathis Gauthey β€” Google review

We loved it. Who does not like looking for gold. It's a tour only place which is lots of fun. Small amount of underground cave to explore. I really wish they would have also showed us some more of the caves arround/on the walk... I think that would have made it. But overall it was a great experience. Fun panning for fools gold with the kids. And seeing round the site. Good place to bring a picnic to as there is no cafe.

Tim Bull β€” Google review

Took the tour of the roman gold mine today. Phil the guide was amazing. Learnt so much. Dogs allowed, not too many refreshments on site. Also make sure you book the tickets for the tours in advance as numbers are limited. And now I know what the Romans did for us!

Really interesting tour, very enjoyable and knowledgeable guide. The surrounding area is beautiful with woodland walks and spaces for picnics. Well worth the visit.

Sights & Landmarks

The Red Kite Feeding Station at Gigrin Farm in Rhayader, Mid Wales offers a captivating experience for visitors. This family-run farm hosts daily feeding sessions where hundreds of majestic Red Kites swoop down to feed, creating a magnificent spectacle. Visitors can observe this breathtaking sight from open fields or viewing hides located just meters away from the action. The farm also provides specialist photographic hides for photography enthusiasts.

One of the best afternoons out ever! Booked a photographers hide and managed to get some epic shots of the red kites. You get to see hundreds of red kites metres away from you. Everyone is so welcoming and accommodating at the farm. Its well kept and the cafe is wonderful. I spent almost 2 hours in the hide enjoying all the birds. Worth every penny! I hope to be back again in the future

Samuel Higgins β€” Google review

Excellent experience, we went in hide 1 and was great to see the red kites feeding. Need to have some patience to wait but once the crows come down then the red kites will swoop in for the food. Lovely site with very friendly staff. Gift shop was lovely with beautiful items and pictures. You can also have a cup of tea and cake and sit outside. Kids loved also seeing the donkey, the cats and the dog on site also.

S Evans (Sevs) β€” Google review

Magnificent. Stunning. Mind-blowing.Book a place in a hide, and make sure you have plenty of battery and storage space in your phone or camera. You'll never have another experience like this. Believe the hype.Blue badge holders are allowed to drive right up to the hides. Staff are all friendly, helpful and welcoming, especially the blue-haired young lady who sold us cake.Well worth the money, and the time.

Fox Vicsson β€” Google review

Even if you are not really into nature and birds, you will find this extremely interesting!Amazing g the work that they do here and managed to build the numbers up from near extinction to the amazing display of so many Kites in the photos and videos here.

Tom β€” Google review

A wonderful experience. You get up close to these versatile birds and see them in large numbers coming to feed. You are courteously greeted at the entrance. Well stocked gift shop. Cafe too. Take your time. Arrive around 2pm, relax and watch the kites reeling around waiting for their 3pm feed. The hides are good and they have a strict maximum number policy so no crowds.

Anthony Langrish β€” Google review

Brilliant experience, well worth the very cheap entry fee. All the staff were welcoming and knowledgeable. The hides were well maintained and they made sure to not overcrowd them.Unfortunately someone walked off the trail straight into the feeding area, it was reported and staff dealt with it immediately. This did scare off the kites for a while, but patience paid off and we witnessed the remarkable!Just visit, if you’re reading you’re already interested. You wont need binoculars they get that close!

Laurie Simmonds β€” Google review

Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Lovely coffee shop and gift shop. The hides were great, not over crowded and really close to the action! The Red Kites were fed at 3 o'clock but were circling hours before and the trees were full of them. When the food was driven in literally hundreds of Kites were dropping out of the air, it was just awesome. We used canon R6 and R7 with 200-500 lens and took an 800 but I found the crop was tight as they were much closer than expected! They drop in so fast and don't really land so you have to be quick. I gave up and just watched the aerial acrobatics instead. They hung around even after the food was gone so plenty of time to watch and take photos. The farm is in a beautiful setting with limited parking so it's best to book in advance. They have toilet facilities and picnic benches and also a viewing field. An all round amazing experience for birders and nature lovers! We are definitely going back in the spring/summer as although it was dry it was very grey and chilly and a bit of sun would make for better photos. A really wonderful day!

Sallyanne Redden β€” Google review

We had such a great time watching the red kites feeding. It is 100% worth the journey and the money. The shop is expensive but the business is completely reliant on the money it receives from entrance and souvenir fees. Will definitely return and bring more people next time, the birds are beautiful ❀️

L HC β€” Google review

A β€˜must-do’ if you are in the area with an afternoon spare. It is quite an incredible sight to witness as the daily feeding starts and these magnificent birds gradually circle in from all directions. We were fascinated watching their caution and their social rules they seemed to follow as the birds grew in number circling in the air. We paid to sit in one of the hides but the experience would have been equally amazing just sitting on the hill watching the birds fly in.The tea shop offered Red Kite and nature themed collections as well as ice creams and delicious cakes. We booked ahead the morning we visited and arrived at around 2pm and had tea and cake. Feeding is at 3pm daily during summer time or 2pm winter time. We watched the birds for well over an hour from the hide then took advantage of a way-marked 1.5 mile walk up the hill for fabulous views of Rhyader and the surrounding countryside, then back down through a lovely wooded area alongside a small brook. Many birds were still circling at 5pm when we left.

Paul Williams β€” Google review

If your a nature Lover, this is a wonderful opportunity to get close to hundreds of Red Kites and two Donkeys. The Farm is easily accessible and there is a coffee shop there to. We took a Picknick that didn't seem to be a problem. The staff are also very helpful. It is a very uplifting experience being able to witness these majestic Birds.

Bagpuss β€” Google review

The whole family loved it, unbelievable just how many wild red kites came once the feeding commenced, plenty of room and the coffee shop is amazing with gifts, delicious coffee, their are toilets on site along with a campsite. Fun for all the family whatever ages. We ranged from 7 to 78 years young.

Daniel Acton β€” Google review

We enjoyed our visit to see the Kites yesterday. It was dull but the rain held off. It took the Kites around an hour to start feeding and they seemed very watchful but we were told they’d been buzzed by a helicopter the previous day and it may have upset them. Definitely worth a visit to see these magnificent birds!

Jane Palma β€” Google review

Absolutely incredible. This has to be one of our favourite afternoons out ever. To be able to have seen one red kite close up would have been incredible but to see hundreds of them and so close up feeding from one of the hides was such a special experience and made us pretty emotional. We were even allowed to take our dog with us which was even better. The owner and staff are so friendly also and there is a lovely cafe, gift shop, picnic benches and toilets also. There are other animals around including the lovely couple of donkeys. Plus there is a lovely walk there to do which has fabulous scenery. The only thing we wish was that it was open for longer as we would have liked to spend longer there chilling out and taking in the gorgeous scenery. Absolutely fantastic place.Kathy, Mark & Trigger (the greyhound)

Nature & Parks

Penllergare Valley Woods is a sprawling woodland in Swansea, offering peaceful greenery and hiking trails with waterfalls and bridges to explore. The park boasts a volunteer-operated coffee shop, with delicious cake and coffee available for purchase. Visitors can also enjoy activities such as spotting stepping stones and exploring small ponds throughout the woods. Parking costs 2 pounds per day, which helps fund the maintenance of this tranquil oasis. Toilets are available on site for convenience.

A great place to go for a woodland walk. Plenty of trails, foot bridges and small ponds plus a waterfall to explore. You can also enjoy a well earned cuppa in the coffee shop afterwards. Plenty of parking on site which costs Β£2 for the day. There are also toilets available.

Duncan Thomas β€” Google review

Amazing place. Lots of woodland to walk around and stretch your legs. Some steps and paths are tad steep but there other easier routes. It has Stunning views and a lovely lake with a small waterfall. Kids loved it, expecially the ducks. Free to visit although there is a Β£2 charge for parking. Will have to visit the cafe next time. Will definitely be back here again soon.

Penllergare woods is a brilliant place for a walk any time of year.Be it by yourself or with family, friends or man's best friend. There are plenty of routes to take but if your taking a dog please bare in mind the Adders in summer months and other wild life. There is a fairly new Coffee shop/ Park information building with toilets that has popped up. With a lively view of the garden area, it's a great place to watch nature play. Squirrels often come back and forth along with different birds fluttering past. There's a beautiful little waterfall which has a deep enough pool area for people to jump off into. But at your own risk of course. There's so many bits to explore and several different entry routes so you can return again and again exploring different parts.I highly recommend some old shoes as you can go off the beaten track and explore the path of the water round to a lovely bamboo area. There's plenty of space to park up and Lazzets is the perfect place to fuel up after a lovely walk or even before hand.(Check opening times as they are under a refurbishment)Stunning food great price.

A beautiful oasis of green and calm and water on the edge of Swansea. Lots of good trails to follow through the woods and areas to explore. Great for dogs, fun for children. Seek out stepping stones and waterfalls! A wonderful volunteer-run cafe with great cake and coffee! Your purchase in the cafe and payment for parking helps to fund this tranquil gem.

Andy W on Gower β€” Google review

Beautiful place for a walk through woods on both sides of the river and waterfall. Cafe with toilet at the car park. Flower garden as well. Building is being extended currently. Just make sure you are out before the car park gets locked early evening.

David Peck β€” Google review

Beautiful wooded park with miles of bike trails and footpaths that take you all around the grounds. It's vast, and there are plenty of things to do and see here.Wildlife is everywhere.. so much birdsong 🐦 to enjoy... even ducks and ducklings in the lakes. Herons can be seen here... dragonflies and damselflies feeding on the wing are also visible on warm, sunny days every year.Seating areas are positioned throughout the woods, and there's good picnic areas for the family. Well worth a visit soon for the peace and tranquillity it gives to all visitors. Enjoy 😁

RICHARD SAUNDERS β€” Google review

Wonderful woodland space with various different paths to walk along and a waterfall to top it all off. There are multiple access points on different sides of the site for those on foot.Pay-to-park car parking is available with a cafe at the start of the paths.Highly recommend for nature lovers, though this place can get busy on sunny days.

What an amazing hidden gem just off the M4. Stopped in here on our way through to the Gower peninsular.Definitely worth a visit and walk around, took about 2 hours with a lovely cafe on site for drinks and cake afterwards. The waterfalls, river and lake are stunning and worth getting of the main paths onto some of the more wild pathways to fully explore.

Paul Cobb β€” Google review

Gorgeous woods, so many places and routes to explore. It's not particularly well signposted so we got lost a few times but it was thoroughly enjoyable and absolutely gorgeous spaces and the kids enjoyed it very much.

Paul francis Gates β€” Google review

Fab place to enjoy a walk and even though it was raining during our visit, it was very pleasant with the different varieties of trees, plants and paths to explore. A hidden gem just off the M4. We will return at a different time of year to see it again in another season.

Jemma harris (Jem) β€” Google review

What a lovely find, just minutes away from the M4, it is a wooded paradise. There are a number of paths to take, a higher one where you have views over the valley or a riverside walk to the secret waterfall. I was amazed to see such spectacular scenery so close to hustle and bustle!

Vicki Rees β€” Google review

Wonderful Nature Reserve with fantastic woodland πŸ„πŸŒ²πŸͺ» paths (but those could be a bit better maintained because lots of difficulties can cause crossing the river after few days of rainfall).Legendary waterfall πŸ’¦ which took major part in creation of world photography can't be missed! But don't forget to take a look around and spot some heritage remains like one of the first astronomical Observatories! 😲

Mart W. β€” Google review

It's a pleasant walk, I am not sure how far it extends but we walked the lake in an hour which cost us Β£2.50 for parking

amanda-jane Freeland β€” Google review

I have visited this woods many times with my dogs and there so many tracks and areas to explore. I have also recently had the pleasure to photograph a hand-fasting ceremony here in one of the wooded glades. As a photographer you are spoilt for choice for locations, from the waterfall, rock features, bridges and woodland.

Steve Wheller (Art by Design Photography) β€” Google review

Beautiful walk. Can tell the place is well looked after, dog friendly too!Spent about 2 hours here but we stopped a lot to play in the river, nice route that laps the whole river but there are also detours!Car park closes at 5!!If there was one thing I could change it would be public bins as there wasn't any on the walk itself.

Emilie Rees β€” Google review

A beautiful woodland walk with many paths to discover. Most of the paths are gravelled, and some earthy trails with bridges and a waterfall. There are toilets available, disabled, and baby changing. Also, a volunteer run cafe with a covered seating area overlooks a gorgeous garden. There seems to be some kind of development going on there at the moment, but it doesn't affect the walk at all. Free entry, but there is a Β£2 car park fee. Dogs allowed.

Cave exploration attraction with a dinosaur park, museum, Iron Age farm and kids' play area.

A great day out, very reasonably priced ticket as there is a lot included. 3 stunning caves to explore, 2 much larger than the third. A cafe, souvenir shop, lots of dinosaurs and information to learn. The visit takes 2-3 hours, you ideally need to wear closed shoes or trainers, as it can be slippery in the caves. Also a jacket is recommended, as the caves temperature is fairly lower than outside. A very unique experience, we would definitely recommend visiting with friends or family. Highly enjoyable and a lot of parking available.

Eleftheria Fyrogeni β€” Google review

Well-worth a visit, very well maintained and managed caves. No mouldy smell inside, very well lit & very helpful and friendly staff. The pictures don't do much justice as the real deal... Sincerely suggest a visit, especially if you have kids who would like caves & dinosaur stories. The view from the top is beautiful ❀️

Fantastic day out with so many attractions on site. 3 caves, dinosaurs Park, iron age village a farm ,stone circles and play parks. There is so much to do and see. Gold panning and the land train are also great fun. There is a gift shop, cafe and a car park. Booking in advance is a must.

Steven Moseley β€” Google review

Fantastic experience visiting these show caves!3 Caves in total located around the park as you walkthrough, with the iron age village and dinosaur path to look at along the way.Great place for families to visit as having the model dinosaurs keep the kids entertained if they don't take to the caves too much! There is a cafe on site if you want food, drink or a cup of tea while you're there.Would advise that this attraction does have some areas with low head room inside some of the caves and entering one also. This attraction is also on the side of a steep hill, so walking around for some people may be difficult at times.

Where's_Mike β€” Google review

Amazing day out. The caves are some of the best I've been in, well presented and easy access. Tickets need to be booked online in advance. Toilets and baby change can only be accessed by leaving and re-entering the park which is a bit of a pain, especially with so much to see inside. The dinosaur park kept it interesting for our toddler as we walked between the caves.

Christopher Llewellyn β€” Google review

Wonderful Cave experience. Kids enjoyed it as there were lots of dinosaur models outside the caves. Bone cave was very narrow and low head clearance, so it will be difficult for people with mobility issues. There was a charity train running from the lower carpark every 10 mins.Kids enjoyed petting the farm animals located near the charity train stop. You will need a cave entrance ticket to enter this farm, though there were no checks done.

Martin Robert β€” Google review

Fantastic time here as a couple with a 6 year old. I really enjoyed the history, the little one enjoyed exploring!Everyone loves the Dino's!Great experience but not disabled friendly, though I'm not sure how they could change that inside the caves.

Rhys Ford-Young β€” Google review

This is an amazing experience, especially for the price. There are 3 caves to visit and a good walk around the park packed with excellent dinosaur models with movement and sound. My God sons loved it. After that there is a free miniature golf course, a free roam animal experience with interactive elements such as milking a goat model and also a kids adventure play area with scooters, slides and a little tractor course all included on the price. There is also a donation based land train to and from the park from the caves which the littlest loved. Highly recommend the park it's self. Would have been 5* but the food from the cafe was not good, would avoid the baguettes and bring a packed lunch next time.

Ciara β€” Google review

Amazing place to visit with kids. Whole day can be spent easily. 3 caves to visit and the Cathedral is the best and most beautiful. The dinosaur park which lead you to the two additional caves help you to climb up to the mountain which gives you a beautiful view for the surrounding mountains. Highly recommend! It worth its price and under 3s can go free. Helpful staff and well looked after place.

Sergiu O β€” Google review

Great as always, with lots of walks, places to see and exhibits to admire. Caves are open, as well. Some of the pathways to dinosaurs ( down to the stream) were closed, but we enjoyed the rest of it. The Shire with playgrounds and animals roaming freely were amazing. It was such a relaxing day. Highly recommend.

Ioana Preoteasa β€” Google review

Absolutely stunning place! Amazing day out and definitely has to be seen! Everything is included in the tickets the entrance for the caves and the farm! One of the best places in the heart of Wales! Book tickets before visit and the parking is also included!

Magdalena Petrova β€” Google review

I have been visiting here since I was a kid. The place is beautiful, informative and fun for the kids. Some of the outdoor exhibits are starting to show their age, but only if you look closely. The cafe offers simple fayre at a reasonable price, and all the staff try to be as helpful as possible. When you visit the farm area, keep an eye out for Ivy, she loves a good scratch behind the ears. The paths are quite steep in places, and some areas are simply not wheelchair or buggy friendly at all, but that is the nature of the attraction, and the place is as accommodating as possible.

Evan Williams β€” Google review

Fair priced considering how many caves you get to explore, weather was terrible when we came but didn’t affect anything. They have a big outdoor dinosaur area which looks really cool- perfect for the little ones!

life0ffthegrid β€” Google review

Fantastic experience for a family. Our daughter loved the dinosaurs and the cave experience. Well maintained, clean and immersive experience with brilliant caves to explore. Cave 1 is a long and winding tunnel, low in parts but still accessible. There are some steps and steep parts and lots of water when we visited after a month of heavy rain. Some parts of the caves were blocked off due to flooding which was a little concerning especially as not told of this before entering. Cave 2 the cathedral cave was a huge stunning cave. The food was a bit of a let down, Β£8 for a very basic baguette sandwich, they could douch better. All in all a great family day out though.

Victoria Brighton β€” Google review

I last visited the caves 22 years ago and it was lovely to go back with my family. On the whole the experience was great, however the museum was pretty awful and dated. Lots of the lights weren’t working so we couldn’t see the exhibits and I don’t think much has changed in 22 years. Time for a refresh there I think, maybe some decent artefacts etc.cafe was fine, again maybe a refresh would be good but I’m pleased to see it hasn’t gone too commercial. Kids enjoyed the dinosaurs and the caves are brilliant. Always worth a visit.

Rhyann Milne β€” Google review

It's a really nice way to spend a few hours. The caves are great, with good non-slip paths and not many low points. Only the bone caves needs a hat, and you need strong knees to follow the path. The dinosaur park is great for the kids with loads of animatronics and an atmospheric setting.

Mark Brown β€” Google review

There is a good amount to see here: there are three caves, one is a good walk around (easy enough to do), the other smaller but with piped music which was cool. The final smaller but with an interesting film on some history. There is a dinosaur park, interesting for the littler ones. A cafe that's a bit pricey but ok, and a few other bits. If you go then definitely walk down to the bottom of the hill where they have a show farm with a variety of animals wondering about, and a big play barn that's good fun!

Jon Hobson β€” Google review

Stunning caves and very big. Hidden natural beauty in the mountains. My daughter also loved the dinosaurs.

Christina Penaluna β€” Google review

The caves are incredible, I've visited others and these are so much bigger and really are spectacular. The video of behind the show caves was an amazing watch, especially whilst you're down in the caves themselves. The dinosaurs are fun if a little dated, some of the other exhibits are the same. The shire horses were beautiful and there were some sweet other animals. What really lets it down is the cafe. So expensive and the food is really poor. We had baguettes and at over Β£7 each for chicken and bacon mayo that was predominantly mayo and rubbery ham we felt really ripped off.Plus they had crammed in far too many tables and chairs, trying to move through the area with a cane was really difficult. Definitely think about less mobile people and accommodate them a little more, maybe with a bench by the cave entrance for example as it's quite the journey and nowhere to sit until you get to the dinosaur section.

Cathedral

Sights & Landmarks

Brecon Cathedral, which dates back to a 1093 priory, is an impressive medieval church renowned for its notable stained glass. It serves as the cathedral of the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon and houses the Regimental colours of the South Wales Borderers who fought in the Isandhlwana battle during the Zulu wars. The Harvard Chapel annex is particularly noteworthy. Visitors can enjoy refreshments at the Pilgrim cafe/shop on-site, which will reopen in spring.

It's the first time3I see the dog friendly cathedral. Worth visiting if you go to Brecon. Entrance is free of charge.

Gr3at White β€” Google review

Really nice visit to this cathedral. The history is really nicely presented on multilingual fact sheets around the cathedral, with lots of really interesting artifacts. Enjoyed learning all this stuff in addition to seeing the inside. The tree ID tags outside were a nice addition and the cafe looks like it would be a nice break (we didn't stop to eat). I don't know if I'd make a visit just for this, but the great grounds and history made for a nice stop.

Brecon Cathedral is the cathedral of the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon and seat of the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon. It is the most beautiful place and in the Harvard Chapel annex are the Regimental colours of the South Wales Borderers that were present in the famous battle of Isandhlwana during the Zulu wars. The on site Pilgrim cafe/shop is also a lovely place for refreshments but it is closed at the moment (to be opened again in the spring). Simply put it is superb medieval church, one of the finest examples of medieval architecture in Wales.Free entry with toilets only available in the cafe. Nearby pay and display cafe. Easy walking access from Brecon town.

Lovely peaceful Cathedral, well worth a visit if you are in the area. Nice little tea room too.

Kenneth Moyse β€” Google review

The cathedral is set in its own grounds surrounded by ancient walls. But there is access by foot through the gateways. Entrance to the church is via the door, where the church and old building connect. The church seems well kept and maintained and hosts lots of references to colonial British life and the local army regiments. Not much sense of the current witness or community, apart from choristers. Worth a visit, but left feeling it was a relic of history that has not made the change to represent life changing faith today.

Lovely old cathedral with numerous interesting corners and relics - Brecon was a key town in medieval times - 200 archers from here recruited for the battle of Agincourt.

The cafe was great value and the staff are very welcoming. The Sunday lunch options accommodate all the groups dietary requirements and the puddings were amazing. Just sorry we did not have room for cake. A gem and we will re visit when we return

Stunning Cathedral. Acoustic sound was good for 'The Music of Adele by Candlelight' even though the candles were l.e.d and not true candles. Shame πŸ˜ͺ. Very nice building and staff. Keep up the good work.

Wonderful Peaceful Beautiful just some of the words I can think of to describe this place . Oh and Delightful for the lady working here who told me all about it .It was built on the site of an earlier Celtic Church by Bernard de Neufmarche and rebuilt in the reign of King John in the Gothic style .It was known as the Church of the Holy Rood and was a major pilgrimage site . In the nave today you can still see two wooden doors opposite each other which in its day had a bridge between them with a great Golden Rood stood on it . Pilgrims would enter one door touch the cross and exit by the other .The oldest part of the building is said to be a fantastic stone font with depictions of the Green Man and Tree of Life on it . On the day I visited there was a very talented Organist practicing which I enjoyed . The windows are amazing and the atmosphere very homely . I think an hour in here could easily convert the staunchest of non believers .There is a very interesting Crucifix hanging from the ceiling made by a local lady from drift wood . One of a kind I am sure .A lovely place and wonderful day out .

The Small Breeds Farm Park is an incredibly enjoyable destination with ample parking space and minimal wait time to enter. Despite it being a busy day on Good Friday, the clean and accessible toilets with available hand washing facilities were a convenience. The cafe, although initially crowded, provided an opportunity to relax later in the day. Interacting with the animals was a delightful experience as visitors could feed goats and sheep while exploring certain areas.

Such an incredible place! The staff were lovely and clearly take such great care of the animals. The animals were lovely, friendly, and great fun to interact with! Getting to go into the pens with them was such an amazing experience - would highly recommend to everyone and anyone! The cafe and facilities were lovely too and all very reasonable priced! Would pay twice the price to do it again!

Amazing family day out. What a place! Took my wife and two daughters (ages 6 and 2). Loved every second. Spent 4 enthralling hours there, petting & feeding countless animals. You can get into the pens to have hands on contact with lambs & sheep, goats & kids, which the girls loved. The whole place is clean & well laid out. The animals look really well cared for and the staff are all very friendly & knowledgeable. The cafe offers very nice coffee and excellent cakes. The owls were impressive too - we got to stroke one called Damien.I highly recommend.

Absolutely brilliant. We’ve been coming here since our children were very small and we still come back. The animals are well looked after. The staff are always friendly and it’s just a great place to stop off for a few hours or a day trip. I can’t recommend this place highly enough. Just go. The kids will love being able to wander with the animals and you’ll love seeing them have a great time. One of those secret places that once you go once. You’ll be going back again and again.

We absolutely loved our visit - we visited with a 6 year old and a baby. The staff were incredibly friendly. I can honestly say I have never seen so many owls! The farm animals were very tame - we fed the sheep and goats and stroked the horse and donkeys. The food in the cafe was good and reasonably priced. Would 100% visit again!

Joel Harley β€” Google review

Fantastic park with a great selection of animals, including the best owls I’ve ever seen, staff on hand to assist and pet animals, plenty of outdoor seating with covered seating in the cafe and at the front, nice coffee (in actual mugs) and good pricing. Pay on arrival and bring a pair of wellies - there are tarmac surfaces so it is accessible, but I found myself going on the grass when the paths were busy (which I was fine with). Would recommend and visit here with others or again as a family!

Lovely little place to see lots of animals. Spent about two hours here as a nice place to stop over for lunch and it was great. Saw one day old baby goat twins soo cute, and our kids got to feed and interact with lots of different sheep and goats. Plus so many other animals and all the owls to see and learn about. Little shop and cafe too.

Ben Davies β€” Google review

Absolutely fantastic place to visit, it was a bit busy when we got there, but it was Good Friday, so we did anticipate it likely would be busy. Plenty of space for parking and only queued for a minute to pay to enter. Small cafe and outside seating area, cafe was incredibly busy, so we visited later in the day. Toilets were clean and accessible, hand washing facilities available too. We purchased food for the goats and sheep, and fed them as we passed them. Lovely to be able to mix in with the animals in certain areas. We were there for a few hours, and had a pit stop for a toasted sandwich and a drink at the cafe. All in all, family friendly, not too pricey and the sun was shining.

Very pleasantly surprised. Very well maintained and clean. Lots of very well looked after animals, with the largest amount of owls I've ever seen in one place. Goats and sheep Very gentle when you feed them and all look very healthy and happy. Highly recommend a visit πŸ™‚

Had a wonderful visit with the family on what ended up being a beautiful sunny day. My little girl had so much fun petting the goats and the other small animals and she loved looking at all the different breeds of owls. So many different owls! A lovely place, well laid out, lots of different animals to see and feed. It's even possible to go in a couple of fields with sheep and pygmy goats and stroke them. Amazing chickens with beautiful feathers, birds, alpacas, piggies. A fabulous time was had by all. There's also a cafe with scrummy cake. All the staff are lovely too. We saw them take an owl for a walk, chase some chickens (to check them) let the alpacas run and divert a running goat.

Fantastic day out. Went for my granddaughters birthday. Staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. Animals all looked happy and well fed. Extremely lucky to see 2 lambs moments after they were born. Plenty of areas to walk around. Good selection of areas to eat. Would recommend to everyone to visit and support this family run business.

Great place! Lots to see and extras are allowed. We went as 3 adults which was still brilliant for. Owls and the animals came with a description and information about them.We also purchased a bucket of sheep and goat food.Chick's and young owls were great to see. Some great personalities to see in the animals!

I love visiting this place. I’d buy a year pass if I didn’t live so many winding roads away. I’ve been twice and I’ll be going again soon. I think the miniature goats are my favourite. They’re so friendly. The farm is set out in an easy way to view everything. There are lots of interesting owls. You could visit in the rain when all the animals are in the undercover area. All of the animals are so friendly, even the noisy goose, which was a lovely surprise for me.

Take a tour of the distillery and purchase some of their delicious beverages to enjoy at home.

It was really neat to visit the very first distillery in Wales. My brother and Dad have loved Penderyn for years, so it was really nice to stop and check it out! We did the tour and learned so much! The lady who gave the tour was really kind and a great guide! We got to walk around the whole distillery as she explained the process. The tour came with 2 complementary tastings at the end and we ended up getting some gifts to take home.

Absolutely fantastic place to visit, I cannot recommend this distillery enough. Went here with my elderly father, we didn't have to pre book just turn up. Cost of tour very good. A nice size group of people were shown around the vats and how the whisky is made, and at the end a delicious tasting of the different types that Penderyn sell.Of course that then leads you to just purchase some of your favourites, and why not!A trip I would do again.

Lovely distillery & whiskey but why sell a 4pm-5pm tour if you're going to be chasing us out because you need to shut at 5? Also cash registers had shut before tour had finished so be aware that you may not be able to spend cash (as we were going to). Also shame there was another group in the tasting bar so we couldn't hear everything.

I had the pleasure of visiting Penderyn Distillery in the beautiful Brecon Beacons on October 10th, 2023. This independent distillery is a hidden gem for whiskey enthusiasts and anyone interested in Welsh history. The distillery tour provided a fascinating insight into the art of whiskey-making, starting with a warm welcome from our knowledgeable guide. We explored the entire process, from milling and mashing to distillation, even getting a close look at their unique Faraday stills. The educational component was well-structured, offering a glimpse into the history of whiskey-making in Wales and the broader Welsh heritage.Penderyn's dedication to quality is evident, as they produce small quantities of exceptional malted barley spirit that matures into some of the smoothest malt whiskies worldwide. Not only did we learn about their outstanding single malt whiskies, but also about their other products like Merlyn Cream Liqueur, Brecon Five Vodka, Brecon Gin, and Siddiqui Rums. The tour concluded with a delightful tasting session, allowing us to sample two of their products or take home a miniature bottle. The gift shop had a variety of offerings for souvenirs and gifts. One tip for future visitors: It's wise to pre-book your tour online to secure your spot. Also, remember that the production floor is not accessible to under 14s or wheelchair users due to safety reasons. Penderyn Distillery is a must-visit for whiskey lovers and anyone looking to appreciate the craftsmanship and heritage of Welsh whiskey-making.

I've been a couple of times on the tour and I have loved it every time. Learning about the process of whisky making is very interesting, and the difference in process using the Faraday Still is fascinating. The tour is completed with a couple of samples from the wide variety of choice of different whisky created by Penderyn, my personal favourite is the Rich Oak.After the samples, there is a lovely little factory shop to buy the whisky and there are other local Welsh goods available.Definitely worth a visit (or 2).

Country park

Nature & Parks

Margam Country Park is a vast 800-acre park in Neath Port Talbot, featuring Margam Castle, an orangery, gardens, and a narrow-gauge railway. It's a popular destination with activities like horse riding, fishing, lake boating, archery, and the Go Ape tree top adventure. The park also offers the Margam Activity Centre with various outdoor activities for all ages. Families can enjoy the adventure playground and wood vibrations pathway while exploring the stunning ruins and gardens.

When planning to visit this place, I wasn't expecting a huge amount of interesting things for kids or for the rest of the family. I was completely mistaken! With two young kids, we spent a good time walking to the adventure playground through the wood vibrations pathway. It was interesting, fun and while windy the play area was great and hidden by trees which helped cut out the wind.Unfortunately, the train was out of service when we went, but it looked like it would have been great as well. The house and Abbey were stunning, as were the walled gardens. A very dog friendly place, but beware that the paths through the wood are steep and not paved and can be slippery if wet.A wonderful time had by all and I highly recommend it!

Really lovely. There is disabled parking however only 4 spaces which were full when I came but the main car park had space near the entrance so was not an issue. This park is so beautifully maintained and the animals super friendly! Can give them a head rub if they fancy it.The pathways are wheelchair and buggy friendly and there are go cart type things that you can hire.Really nice cafe and ice cream shops around. Just a perfect place to be. The historical buildings are really well maintained and definately a sight to see.

Lovely place for walking and enjoying the open space. Animal walk trail has alpaca's they were so cute my niece (2yrs) got to feed them. Castle was closed for works but it had no effect on us as was not planning on going inside today. Children's fairytale land could prob do with some upgrading bit worn looking. Β£7.50 for a car not to bad if you plan to be there a few hrs.

JG Taylor β€” Google review

Even though the entry is free, the parking charge for an hour is 7.5 pounds which is relatively high. But the place is beautiful and relaxing. You don't get to see the insides of the palace much. The park, wildlife, history and the aesthetics are worth visiting for.

Gowri Anil β€” Google review

Lots of space and very dog friendly, they have a small farm area you can go through and you can easily spend and hour or two just walking around. Parking is reasonable as it's around Β£6 per car but that allows you access into the estate. Wish the cafe was slightly more exciting and did a larger range of cakes and snacks etc. We live nearby and it's great when you want to walk the dog but avoid the hills, although there is a lovely walk if you go up the hill past the go ape setup.

Beautiful park with deer roaming around the grounds. The gardens are extensive, especially magnificent are the Tulip trees (liriodendron tulipiers). There’s a great play area for children, a castle and other buildings for them to play around. Pleasant cafe in the stables (currently outdoor seating). The paths are well made and easy to walk, gravel finish. A beautiful spot with far reaching views. It is a large area to explore!

Brilliant place for the kids. Couple of parks, both with plenty going on. The Fairytal one with the little houses is great and the castle great for hide and seek. Pedalo, go karts for getting about. Only thing I'd say lets it down is no decent food, burger van and couple of other things but couldn't find any cafe etc. But I may have missed it. Great little farm also.

Visited for the luminate Christmas trail. What a beautiful, beautiful event! Went with a two year old and nine year old, didn't take a pram but definitely could have. It was so magical, we spent a good two hours there. It was a feel good place, it was relaxed and not rushed and we absolutely loved it and will definitely be returning again. We usually do Bute park but decided against it due to the parking and I ended up preferring it. It was wonderful!

The light displays were beautiful. It wasn't overcrowded, so you could stroll through at a leisurely pace without being herded, unlike other places we have been. There were interactive displays dotted around and a lovely display of fairies that the children loved. The food was well placed, and there were plenty of choices. We took our own marshmallows, and you can use the firepits provided to toast them.

Such a beautiful place to be, beautiful and clean, set across a vast area with plenty of activities for everyone. Amazing historical place to be and it’s so nice to access. The Orangery looks incredible. Good access and excellent facilities, though being winter some parts were closed which is no surprise. The Turbine room was fascinating and so great to learn they still use Hydroelectric, just amazing. Lovely gentleman explaining everything and who clearly was well informed about the House and the Gardens, top man! Felt the lady serving in the tea room for the Manor House could learn to smile or be a little more welcoming, seemed a hard one to crack. Some of the signage for the trails were damaged or missing so finding your way around was challenging at times. We loved the place though and we plan coming back in the summer months.

Really beautiful park and buildings, lovely sculptures dotted around the grounds. Can spend endless hours walking or other activities. Nice little cafe in the castle courtyard with veggie/vegan/gf options. Great for photographers. Helen Mary Thomas β€” Google review

I spent the day here with my wife and 2 boys (10 & 3 years old). There was plenty of parking available, and there was an entry fee, which was quite expensive at Β£7.20. The park is kept in excellent t condition and I'd recommend planning in a full day for your visit as there is quite a lot of ground to cover and lots to see.The Manor House itself always seems to be having some restoration work done, or at least it has the few times I have visited over the past few years. The gardens are well kept and are perfect for people looking for some nice family photos. Near the gardens are some tiny houses in a kids' park that depict nursery rhymes inside. The boys loved this little park as it had assault courses and massive board games. The cafe located next to the Manor House was rather pricey but the quality of the food was very good. There was another kids' play area with wooden climbing frames, etc. On the way from the Manor house to the farm area, against the backdrop of the Port Talbot steel works. This was a well-kept park, although lacking in benches, but there were some rocks to sit on.The farm area had a variety of farm animals, which were relatively tame and enjoyed a fuss from the boys. There is a nice little trail that takes you back to the car park. It would be great if you are a dog owner or like me making every effort to wear the kids out.Great day out, I would recommend bringing a packed lunch if you're aiming to keep the spend down. Will definitely pay a visit again in the near future. Maybe next time, we will tackle the Go Ape course or even explore some of the walking trails.

Museums

The Big Pit National Coal Museum is a former colliery that offers interactive displays on mining life and underground tours guided by ex-miners. The museum allows visitors to explore the tunnels and coalfaces of a real coal mine, providing insight into what life was like for miners from 1880 to 1980. Various colliery buildings above ground, including the 1939 pithead baths, are also open for exploration with displays showcasing the history of the industry.

Fascinating insight into the industry that defined South Wales. The mine is in a beautiful area with original buildings and equipment preserved, making for an interesting walk around especially if weather is good to you. However the crown jewel is the underground mine tour which gives you first hand insight into what working in these mines would've been like. Our tour guide Pete was incredible! He was a retired miner himself, from generations of Welsh miners. He was extremely informative and entertaining, and could give us his own experience of working in a mine. The tour lasted around 45 minutes and covered a lot of important aspects of the mine. There are very low ceilings at some parts, at nearly 6ft I found myself almost at a right angle at some parts to get through, but the bits where you have to duck are quick and you won't be walking for more than a minute or so in those parts. However due to this, uneven ground, and the dark setting, I don't recommend the tour for those with mobility impairments or those who are claustrophobic.Parking is Β£5 which I think is more than fair when the museum is free. Staff are friendly and there's a gift shop with a good mix of tourist novelties, information, and independent artist goods. If you are able bodied I would definitely recommend going to the Big Pit!

Abi Rayner β€” Google review

I had a good time here, going down the mine was fun and a real good experience. The miner who gave the tour was very polite and gave plenty of information and did a good job at including the guests in questions and engaging with everyone about the pit. I have been 3 times now and found this to be the best visit due to being included in the tour, I also been during covid and had a good experience then with minimal amount of people. My family enjoyed every time, I will visit again in the future and do recommend. I was happy with the overall experience from start to finish.

Rhian Roberts β€” Google review

Great time out with the family. We did have to wait for about an hour for the mine tour although it was worth the wait. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Plenty to see and do. This was during the school holidays.

Excellent, everyone should pay a visit to see to see the danger miner's faced every day. Their fight for better working conditions and pay fully justified their actions in 1984. The trip underground is amazing with the knowledgeable guides, some ex miners. Museum is informative and interesting. So much history to see and read about. It's free and "a must visit" .

What a lovely place. The staff/guides on site are extremely friendly, passionate and informative about the site and the history of the mines. There is lots of buildings to visit on the site and if you get the chance be sure to go in the cage 90m down into the caves - an amazing experience.Lots of interesting facts, illustrations, equipment and machinery to learn about.A great day out.Would recommend bringing your own food, as canteen on site offers limited food cater to limited tastes (not a hit with the kids).Would definitely visit again, even if it were to learn more from the staff/guides.

Vikash Gandhi β€” Google review

This is a great place for all the family. (children less than 1metre tall aren't allowed down the mine for safety reasons). Before we went down the mine we were kitted out with lamps and safety gear. Our guide was an ex-miner who gave an excellent tour. His stories about life below ground for the men, children and animals who worked there really gave us food for thought. The trip down the mine lasts about 50 minutes; you should wear sensible clothing and shoes as it is cold, and slippery in parts. We had to wait a bit for our tour as we went on a Sunday. You can also book a time for your tour online for 5 pounds. Otherwise the whole museum is free. As well as the mine tour, I really enjoyed seeing the baths, canteen and medical centre. Highly recommended!

Well worth going to see. We actually went down into the mine and it was really interesting to see how they got the coal from there. The staff at the canteen were really nice and welcoming.

We had an amazing afternoon here, you pay for parking (Β£5 contactless) and don't have to pay for anything else, it's suggested Β£5 at entrance their was 4 of us, we paid more than this, we queued to go down the shaft, it took about an hour (and they are clear about this waiting time) but what an amazing experience! To understand how they worked and the conditions is great and the guide (Em, I think! Was amazing fun) everyone is friendly and great fun too, the other museum areas are great too and keep your interest even if you don't want to go down the mine (and you would not wait for this obviously) . You can't take anything down the mine (phone etc) so no pics of that, but the memory are great.

Second time here and enjoyed it as much this time as I did last time. Very knowledgeable tour guide and just a fabulous experience. Tour lasts around 50 mins. Then we went to the pit head baths and other ancillary buildings before having a cup of Welsh tea in the canteen. We finished off by checking out the modern mining experience which was also great. Kids really enjoyed it. Great learning experience. Highly recommended.

Jonathan Davies β€” Google review

Lovely place to visit, too small to go in the actual mine but the experience up the hill was a great representation. The site itself was lovely to walkabout the bathhouse was fascinating. Had some freshly made Welsh cakes and sat enjoying the view. Highly recommend a visitΒ£5 to park all day. Short walk and there is more to explore

We turned up on a rainy day with no high expectations. But we were wrong. It was a brilliant experience. The tour and exhibits really conveyed the true nature of the hard work, camaraderie, dedication and humbling work that went on here and elsewhere. We stayed for over two hours and could’ve stayed longer. The staff were super friendly and keen to share their knowledge and stories. We loved it, and usually nonplussed about such things. Highly recommended!

DD DDD β€” Google review

Very informative and engaging experience, spread over several sites and exhibits over the area. Make sure you visit the key sites of the Big Pit - which involves a 45 min guided tour underground, all walking with some steps. Get your timed visit from reception to save lining up. And King Cole, with a virtual guide, both excellent. The Baths is also very interesting, which includes a social history section. Overall a 5 star visit.

What an amazing place, it has changed so much since I went there over 35 years ago, the tour guides where amazing, they made it so much fun as well as a history lesson, plus they knew more or less everything. Very enjoyable, glad we went. They rely heavily on donations so dig deep for this brilliant place.Lovely little cafe, with one of the best Welsh cakes i have had.The shop is great, you can purchase some memorabilia.

kristy β€” Google review

Great day out with Grandchildren, very educational for children and adults! The underground exploration of the mine with our very talented young Lady guide was wonderful, the children were enthralled and have been excited to talk about what they saw. A repeat visit is most definitely needed as we still have much more to experience, the time passed so quickly and we are already looking forward to being able to visit again.

Had an absolutely wonderful time down the mines with Ian, who was a great and very funny guide.I hadn't been since primary school, and it's wonderful to see how many extra exhibits have been developed since then.Excellent value with only Β£5 for parking, and Β£20 for food and drink for three people in the cafe.

Bets Edwards β€” Google review

Absolutely brilliant! It's all I've thought about since going. The tour underground was incredible. Ian, our tour guide was funny, knowledgeable and just a pure delight. I highly recommend this place to anyone. We had 4 children ranging from 6 - 17 and they really enjoyed it to. We can't wait to go again.

Maria Savage β€” Google review

It is a fascinating and fabulous way to get children to experience living history in a fun way.Our guide, Mike, was funny and very informative as well as engaging the children on our tour fully. There is a 1m height restriction, but no age restriction. We had an elderly but sprightly 77 yr old with us, and he managed the underground tour very well in spite of it being uneven to walk in places.A short wait for the next tour to begin, roughly 10 minutes first thing in the morning on a Saturday.Outdoors, there are further attractions all to fo with mining, fabulous views, and a great little coffee shop and gift shop.It even snowed as we came out of the underground tour!Parking is Β£5 for the day, free for disabled users. There is no entrance fee, but you can give donations.5* experience

Lovely educational experience. Great galleries and underground experience. Super enthusiastic guide lady from east London 😘 made our experience wonderful.Modern kids learning about kids life and conditions just over 100years ago give them some thinking... and questioning. Mind opener. Must visit

Super interesting and cool museum to visit in Wales. Just the surroundings are amazing and the museum is an old coal mine were they show you around and explain how mining was done in the old days. The staff were incredibly friendly and nice. 100% recommended!

Cristian Ponce β€” Google review

This is an experience of a lifetime. My friends recommended we stop in and go here because when else am I ever going to be able to go down into a coal mine? We arrived as the second to last tour of the day, and it was absolutely wonderful, because we basically had our own private tour with a miner. Just a fantastic time learning all about coal mines and the history of the region, I found it absolutely fascinating. If visiting Wales, add this to your list!

Castles

Raglan Castle, a 15th-century fortress with an impressive grand gate and mullioned windows, is a historically significant landmark. Though now in ruins, the castle remains breathtaking with its towers that visitors can climb and underground tunnels to explore. The site also features a visitor center that showcases Tudor panels. Visitors can view the moated tower which is quite photogenic and offers great views from the top.

Great experience. One of Wales great castles. So much to see and do. I'd highly recommend a visit. Staff were great, good facilities. Helped that we went on a stunning day as well mind you. Only downside is that it was quite muddy in places where there were bottlenecks and the car park was too. I'd imagine after a bit of rain it would be pretty bad.

Marc β€” Google review

Fantastic Welsh border castle ruined after the end of the Civil War. Some interesting architectural remains from its time as a manor house as well as a castle.Well stocked little shop, toilets on site. Plenty of towers to climb, walls to clamber around fantastic views over the Black Mountains from the top of the main keep. Plenty for history buffs and passing tourists alike.

David Ranger β€” Google review

We went on a beautiful day this time, but I'd been many times before and it's always a fascinating and lovely place. Enchanted this time by the many swifts and swallows that form some of the current residents. Well worth a visit, as this is one of the more important castles in the area, and is still an imposing sight.

Julia Coleman β€” Google review

My first time to Raglan Castle and definitely not my last!We visited on Easter Monday. I planned to get here early as I read there isn't masses of parking, and it paid off as it was already fairly full by time we arrived but we managed to get one of the last gravel spaces. It has been raining heavily so they were telling people coming in not to park on the grass areas as it was so sinky!!There was so much going on. I have to admit, I'm not sure what happens on a normal day as I assume everything we saw was just because it was Easter (I may be wrong though?) but we absolutely loved it.There were fighting re-enactments, you could see the weapons and try things on, see other different hobbies and other goings on that would have happened in those times. A great Jester playing games with the children whom they loved! Throughout the day at different times there were different events. The ruins were also interesting to walk around. On a normal day I'm not sure how much time we would have spent here, but this particular day we spent 3hours.We loved Raglan Castle and can't believe we hadn't been before!

Rebecca Watkins β€” Google review

Fantastic large ruined castle . Lots of stairs to climb towers, tunnels to walk through. One of the towers is moated and very photogenic. Great views from the top of the tower too.

kevin mills β€” Google review

Beautiful spot in wales with a lovely view of the countryside from the castle. It’s about Β£24 for three people to enter so it’s not the cheapest attraction to visit but it’s beautifully maintained and quite a spectacular building.Really loved I could bring my dog (except on the winding staircases)Wish we can just carried our child instead of using a pram.

jaimmie riley β€” Google review

Great castle and pretty quiet in the morning (even for a hot weekend when they had an event on). Didn't use the audio guides but wish we had now as the information on the map and signs dotted around wasn't much to go off. Very dog friendly and could access most of it with the dog - just one or two spiral staircases he couldn't go up so we did those bits one by one. Not much in the way of food unless there's an event on. We had a good time but don't feel the need to come back any time soon, done it now πŸ˜€

Zo? Cashmore β€” Google review

Had a great afternoon wandering around the castle. I took about 100 pictures. I went up two of the towers and the different levels around the castle. I would like to come again when the school children are back in school. Very hard trying to take photographs without people in them.

Francis David β€” Google review

Even on a rainy day in December, Raglan remains a superb example of a castle. There's a moat, keep and towers in a well kept surrounding. Free car parking too.

Laurie Monk β€” Google review

This is such an amazing, beautiful castle, with most of it it tact. If you love history and architecture, then Raglan Castle is the perfect place, but with beauty thrown in. There are such stunning views from the top of the castle all around with wildlife thrown in. There are nests of swifts in the grounds. Its truly beautiful.Raglan Castle has a beautiful gift shop where you can also buy drinks and snacks. They also have easily accessible toilets on the grounds. They also have a big car park so you shouldn't need to worry about parking. The prices to enter the castle were pretty good and affordable for families. All in all, it's a great day out. You won't be disappointed. It's one of the best castles I have seen.

Really stunning castle - or it would have been a good 400 years ago! Still impressive, with plenty to explore underground and with towers you can still ascend. We really enjoyed the visit and spent around an hour to fully experience the site. It wasn’t too busy when we visited, on a cold early March morning. When it is busy, I imagine it wouldn’t be easy to park.

David Stone β€” Google review

A little creepy but his place is amazing. Walking around the interior and reading the numerous and extensive interior signs is so informative and gives you an idea of life in the castle. Coolest thing is looking up at the walls and you see fireplaces still in the masonry walls even though the floors have long disappeared. If you can make it up the 90 narrow steps definitely go up to the tower to see the view that the castle guards had.Gift shop has some interesting items and staff is friendly.Highly recommended.

Bob P β€” Google review

A fantastic medieval castle with Tudor alterations. There could arguably be a few more safety precautions but the castle is well worth a visit even if just for the view available from the top of the great tower! Be mindful of the pigeon nesting on the staircase though...

Will Best β€” Google review

Brilliant place . Lots to explore and steps to climb great picnic area outside free or inside on the old bowling Green toilets and shop on site . No cafe or would be 5 star . Parking is free but limited .

Very cool place! This is a must see! The best castle we visited in southern/mid Wales/England. You can explore a lot of the castle and even go all the way to the top of the original guard tower.

Kenneth Squires β€” Google review

Lovely castle and would recommend. It'd quite extensive and you able to move around the property freely.Move of a medieval residence and interesting to see the small differences between that and a castle.Feel they could have a bit more information and knowledge up about the developments of the area, site etc.

Robert Thornton-Smith β€” Google review

Good day out if it is dry as most of it is open.We went on a very rainy day and it was really quiet so it felt like we had the castle to ourselves which was nice. It's a little bit pricey. The history of the caslte is actually very interesting. The staff is lovely.

Great find just off the motorway, plenty of parking and can purchase an adult ticket in the gift shop for Β£9. Also has toilets. You can explore all around the grounds even go underneath if you want to follow the dark staircase and even climb up one of the towers to get an amazing overview of the castle and grounds as a whole.Amazing place to visit and learn about.

Not only is Raglan one of the most beautiful ruins in the UK, the visit is fantastic as well. The castle is such an interesting and complex design and you can access pretty much all of it, roaming around at will with little to no shepherding around the site. A small number of plaques and installations bring it to life as well. It's just off the A40 on a little side road, it's easy to access. In all, well worth the entry fee.

Malcolm Gledhill β€” Google review

We went on Easter Monday and they had an incredible medieval festival happening. The castle itself is fabulous, you can access almost all of it and there's lots of little rooms and places to explore. There are 2 towers that you can go up and see the views. It has a really interesting history as well and you can see where over the years its been added to and changed by history. It's fairly accessible but there are lots of uneven surfaces and low walls to climb over as well as most of the stairs being spiral staircases. There's definitely some areas that are fine buy if you had mobility issues I'd make sure you have someone to help you or consider if you'll get you moneys worth

Elin Howells β€” Google review

What a fantastic castle with its inner moat. Great atmosphere of going back into time. We'll be definitely visiting again.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Raglan Castle and it was an absolute delight! As a history enthusiast, I thoroughly enjoyed exploring this magnificent medieval fortress. The castle's rich history and stunning architecture truly left me in awe.The product link provided gives a detailed overview of the castle, and I highly recommend checking it out before planning a visit. It includes fascinating information about the castle's construction, its significance during the English Civil War, and the various features and structures that can still be admired today. The castle's location amidst picturesque Welsh countryside only adds to its allure. The well-preserved ruins create a mesmerising atmosphere, transporting visitors back in time to an era of chivalry and grandeur. Exploring the castle's towers, spiral staircases, and secret chambers was like stepping into a storybook. One of the highlights of my visit was the Great Tower, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It's a perfect spot for capturing memorable photos and immersing yourself in the beauty of the Welsh countryside. The castle grounds are meticulously maintained, and there are informative plaques throughout, providing insights into the castle's history. Additionally, the staff were friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to answer questions and offer recommendations, especially when I enquired about flying one of my drones over the castle. If you're a history lover or simply seeking a unique and immersive experience, I highly recommend visiting Raglan Castle. It's a true gem that beautifully captures the essence of medieval times. Prepare to be captivated by its grandeur and transported to a bygone era!

The St. fa*gans National Museum of History is an open-air attraction located in the west of Cardiff, Wales that contains costumed characters demonstrating traditional skills and crafts from throughout Welsh history. Highlights include tours of various original and reproduction buildings, as well as demonstrations of old machinery found at the museum. The museum is considered one of the best tourist attractions in the United Kingdom, and is perfect for those who are interested in learning more about Wales' rich history.

Fantastic place to visit. Amazing houses, history all located within a beautiful location. The site is large but easy to navigate between houses, with good accessibility. On hand guides at each of the houses are knowledgeable and happy to talk. Two on site restaurants and a tea room, but plenty of green spaces on site with picnic benches so easy to bring a picnic or tailor the trip to suit your budget. A great place for an entire family as has everything for all generations.

I was there on a bank holiday, and it is lush! Recommended as a fantastic family day out. The main drawback was the dining hall, which had a limited selection of food, was pricey, and did not have food that looked particularly appetizing. It had a mixture of history, gorgeous walks, and a great play area. Dogs are welcome, and admission is free. Please avoid buses 17 and 18, they are the wrong ones to take! The correct bus to take to get back to Cardiff's downtown was number 32.

Nadine Moustafa β€” Google review

A great place to visit, the massive site can be done in a day but we prefer to spend a few hours just wondering around half of it. Its worth buying some bread from the bakery and there is a fish & chop shop which is quite new but wasn't open when we visited on a Friday. There is a pub now which is still under reconstruction and looks like it will be finished soon. The cafe in the main building does very nice food.

Gareth Williams β€” Google review

It's stunningly beautiful. It is better to plan to spend whole day there. Absolutely free, just pay for a car park in advance to not waste your time there.A vivid immersion into history, a castle with a luxurious park where you can seat enjoying views, and a small museum that add nuances for understanding past eras.

We wish we’d gone a bit earlier because this is a β€œwhole day” experience if you’re truly interested in the history that there is to see here. Absolutely fascinating. All the out buildings and interiors are just wonderful and full of stories and memories. The row of houses where each interior is decorated according to the year it was built is just amazing. We didn’t have time to see the complete gallery section but we will be going back very soon. It’s free to visit which is fabulous. There are various touch pads around so you can donate contactlessly a Β£5 donation which is actually incredible value for what you’re seeing. The car park is Β£6 for the whole day. Take a picnic and wear a comfortable pair of shoes and you will have a fabulous day. Everywhere is wheel chair friendly apart from some of the old buildings. The coffee shop is reasonably priced and great to stop at half way around. There is also a traditional type bakery and sweet shop there. I would advise to take cash as well as cards as the bakery is cash only. It smells delicious.

Beautiful surroundings in which to learn a lot about Welsh history and heritage. Plenty of picnic spots and space. Plenty of room for all, even when busy. No entry fee but there is a Β£6 parking fee. Went over to St fa*gans whilst I was staying in Cardiff during the Bank Holiday. It is also free admission. There are good bus links from Cardiff city centre to St fa*gans so you don't need to bother with the car.The place is really interesting as they have saved and reconstructed a lot of buildings from all over WalesThey also have interesting exhibitions inside as well.I expect that I will be going back when I am back in Cardiff to see what new exhibits they have.

St fa*gans has a variety of props, mansions and gardens that will take you through a time lapse of Welsh culture. It's free as well. You can walk through a time lapse of the Welsh home decade to decade. Go to a traditional sweet shop. Visit Victorian gardens. Visit a solicitors house who served Elizabeth 1st. And my favourite part was looking at the olden rural development which would have housed entire families and their animals. The tour guides will tell you loads about the the props and social history. I was curious and asked about the history and it's curtious to do so.The old school house and court house was was my favourite they were quite spooky.

It is amazing for being free. The car park is six pounds but there isn't an entry fee. The galleries are spaced out well so you're not on top of one another and they're quite interesting. The houses that have been moved and rebuilt are very cool and beautiful. The lakes nearer the back of the woods are beautiful and so is the house. It is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area or not.

Robyn β€” Google review

The outdoor museum is impressive and vast. There are many paths to follow but make sure you consult the maps placed around to make sure you’ve not missed any particular areas of interest. The staff are all very friendly and very knowledgeable. At a minimum this is a nice place to simply walk around if the history itself does not interest you. You’ll need to allow yourself 1.5-2 hours to explore the place at a minimum.NOTE: the 32 bus is a very simple and easy way to get to the museum from the city centre but please be aware that the last return bus is 3pm during the week. You will then be limited to taxi/uber for the return journey which is a significant additional cost given the museum itself is free. I suggest going in the morning and checking the return bus times which are posted at the bus stop.

Amazingly is free to visit ( just car park charge).Would happily pay to visit as it is a beautiful place, lots of buildings from different era's, many of them you can view inside. Brilliant place to visit. Free entrance but Β£6 car park charge. Depending which way you travel, if you go over a train crossing turn immediately left ( right before crossing if from other direction). Don’t bother going into the castle as only 2 rooms are open to view. The day we went it was raining but that didn’t put us off. Lots to see & do. If you like old fashioned sweets I recommend that you go to the shop that sells bread, Β£1.40 per 100g , limited selection there though compared if you went to the main sweet shop that charged Β£2 for 100g. Friendly & helpful staff. The galleries were good. I would definitely visit again if in the area

It's one of my favourite places to visit. Entrance if free and parking is Β£ 6.00 for the day.Wonderful restored buildings showing Welsh heritage. Grounds are enchanting and peaceful. There is just so much to see outside. There is an indoor museum too , but always seem to run out of time to visit it. Good selection of refreshments available.I think it offers a great day out for any age group.

So much to see! Could do several visits to really take everything in. Lots of different historical periods covered. I loved the exhibition on craft makers in the Gweithdy Gallery. Children enjoyed the play area. The cottages showing what inside looked like from 1805 - 1985 was particularly fascinating. Highly recommend as a family day out. You just pay for parking to get in - Β£6. But can give an entry donation if you want to. Three different cafes - couldn't see any GF options in two of them so recommend bringing own snacks/food.

Beth B β€” Google review

It's a beautiful place and some fantastic history. Most of the volunteers were very helpful and friendly. We had a delicious lunch in the cafe in the main building on arrival. Disabled access is pretty good and I was able to take the mobility scooter to all areas, only leaving it to go into some of the houses. There was a disappointing amount closed when we went, the old shop in the village was closed for stock taking, the sweet shop was closed, nothing left in the bakery and several houses closed as well which was a real shame. Bonus was all the new lambs and the piglets on the farm. Was a bit frustrating when I had to leave my scooter to look down the terrace houses, was using my stick and got told off when trying to walk back to my scooter as we were going the wrong way. The comment "I'll let you of as it's not busy". Felt very ableist and was quite upsetting actually, it would have been too long a walk to go all the way round the path. I think some more awareness around accessibility is needed for staff. Entry was free and car park free for disabled, otherwise it is Β£6 a car.

Leanne Swift β€” Google review

This is a fabulous experience. We've been several times since moving to the area and we find new things to explore and see each time. The gardens are beautiful whatever the season. There are wheelchair accessible walks which are clearly marked. The whole site offers a step into the past that is of interest to all ages. There is a nice cafΓ© which offers a variety of food and drink alternatives equally there are lots of benches to enjoy your own picnics. The area is quite spread out so walking is a must but there are lots of places to stop, view and rest if required. There is no entrance fee which is fabulous when so many people are struggling, There is a parking charge of Β£6 (free for disabled badge holders) but it is still very reasonable for a day out. The outside areas are dog friendly too so this is also a great bonus πŸ˜„

Fantastic place to visit with friends or family. Basically you have the main building which houses a gallery and coffee shop, then everything else is dotted about the land, it's a big outdoor museum full of history. They have transported historical buildings from all over Wales and placed them here. The land is vast and exciting to explore. Definitely get there at 10am when it opens to allow yourself time to see everything plus have some time for coffee and food.Parking: it's pay and display, lots of spaces and feels extremely safe. Β£6 for the day. Some tipsWeather : go on a dry sunny day to make the most of your experience. If you don't like rain, wait for a nice day as you'll be outside alot.Food and drinks: there are a couple of places to eat and drink. One is in the main building and the other is near the tannery inside the outdoor area. Both indoors. I didn't eat there but the Coffee wasnt great but the price was high. bring your own if you are a particular about that. There are a few table and benches outside the shop and near the bakery. All in all it's definitely worth visiting and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Some of the cottages are dark inside, don't be startled if a figure looks out from the darkness, it's most likely a staff member.

Great for taking a trip into the past of historic buildings from across Wales. There are barns, farm houses, schools, churches, a pub, shops, beautiful gardens and a row of terraced houses: each decorated from a different decade throughout the 20th century. You could easily spend a whole day here. Well worth a visit.

Castle

Sights & Landmarks

The Cardiff Castle is a beautiful medieval ruin which is the former home of the Welsh Royal Family. It is one of the most frequently visited tourist attractions in Wales and features an elegant Banquet Hall, captivating Chapel & clock tower, and impressive hall centerpiece with its extravagant fireplace.

Really enjoyable visit. The ticket includes the old castle, the house, tunnels and the fire line exhibition. You can download the official Cardiff castle app for a free guidance and history of the Castle and surrounding place. You can also take your own coffee and food and sit for a free inside the Castle on the wooden beaches, or on the grass. I would recommend the place for everyone who is looking for the history of the castle, exploring history of Cardiff.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Cardiff Castle.Beautiful grounds, which are open to the public for free. If you want to see the other sites within the walls, you'll need to pay the entrance fee and it is worth it and reasonably priced.Lots to see, explore and enjoy. Was nice to sit with a lolly and take in the views. Some beautiful architecture with a wealth of history. Highly recommend a visit.

Haydn Richards β€” Google review

Hospitality tickets were worth getting for a gig here... separate toilets and bar so not much queuing for either. Stunning venue for a music event. The paid tour of the castle is definitely worth taking too πŸ‘

L HC β€” Google review

Beautiful castle, plenty of things to explore, Surprisingly beautiful interiors of the house. It also has galleries used as war shelters, an interesting detail. With a Β£4 addition you get to see more, with a guided tour. There is free wi-fi and a free app can be downloaded, where everything is explained in several languages. It's definitely worth a visit.

Aurelia Ghenuche β€” Google review

Castle was very well built. We went to the underground cinema which was brilliant. It was a shame that the bar was closed otherwise it would have been more brilliant. The down fall was it didn’t have much lighting at the exit it was very poorly lit. The toilets were available but not very clean and couldn’t flush the toilets properly. Otherwise it was a great experience

Was great seeing history. The main castle has alot of steep narrow steps so be careful. Loved the mural on the wall it took several years to complete but worth a gander. The military museum was great to see and the inside walls set up showing shelters during the blitz.

Kerri Hopkins β€” Google review

A good place to visit. One of the fortified tunnels takes you back to WW2. Parts of the complex were used as an air raid shelter. The sounds of bombing plus the signage, bunks and other memorabilia all do a good job of taking you back in time. The history before WW2 is of course extensive. There are info points around the grounds so that you can soak up some detail at your leisure. We spent an hour or so strolling around the site. When you're done with that, there's also a military museum. It's quite compact, but has some points of interest. When we visited, a couple of historians were available to discuss a helmet collection. One might not think that helmets are fascinating, but their development through the ages tells a surprisingly interesting story. There is a cafe with outdoor seating. It was a sunny day, so we grabbed a beer. Very pleasant.

S Haddow β€” Google review

Unexpectedly interesting. Amazing rooms. Definitely do both the additional tower and house tours. Both guides were informative and entertaining in different ways. Only complaint was that we bought tickets in advance and then had to buy additional tickets for those tours, rather than being able to get it all at once. So there's really no point booking online in advance. I don't think it was even mentioned before I bought the tickets that to see all the best bits you need to pay again.

Chris Bing β€” Google review

Castle is beautiful, as is the grounds.. we didn't do guided tour but still Β£52 for 2 adults, 1 concession & 1 child and was probably only 6 rooms you can go in which was a bit disappointing although they are stunning rooms. The keep, has amazing views and walking the walls was good and the museum was very interesting too.The big problems for us was the loud music blaring from the "community cricket cup" which we found pretty awful and 100% took away from the peacefulness of the place and finally the toilets which were ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS..filthy, sanitary bins over flowing, no tissue, soaking floor!!!

Abbie Poole β€” Google review

The Castle grounds are a fantastic venue for open-air events. We went to see Queens of the Stone Age, and the whole show was brilliant. Plenty of toilets for the numbers (had to queue for a minute or so, no big deal at all) and plenty of places to get drinks. You will need a mortgage to buy co*cktails there tho

Craig Rees β€” Google review

Castle was a mix of things. A bit of medieval castle. Bit of 19th century stately home. Bomb shelter. Welsh guards museum. Roman ruins. Concert venue. I didn’t like the concert venue as it took away from the ambience. But I get they need it. I found the entrance fee pricey for what you got. Quite liked the Welsh guard museum which is free (downstairs from the souvenir shop. Had I known, unsure if I’d pay Β£14 entrance fee which allowed me to go into the Bute home/castle keep. My favorite parts were free. Also check out the park next to the castle. There’s a stone circle we saw from a distance but didn’t get a chance to visit.

Canadian Travel Review β€” Google review

It is an extremely beautiful castle that has lived for more than a dozen centuries. It was originally built by the Romans as a fortress, but now only the reconstructed northern gate remains from those times, and only a couple of square meters of real masonry. Later, the place outlived the Anglo-Saxons, the Normans, and the Tudors, and everyone who could be outlived (and outlive us too πŸ™‚). I highly recommend visiting both the main tower and the black tower. On the right side (from the entrance) there will be a huge building of various facades of different Gothic styles, it is also undoubtedly worth a look, because it contains the whole history of this place from medieval times and the Middle Ages.

Danyil Yuris β€” Google review

Cardiff Castle offers a unique blend of history and beauty right in the heart of the city. With its intriguing mix of Roman and Norman heritage, every corner tells a story. The castle grounds are a peaceful oasis, perfect for reflecting on the rich tapestry of events that have taken place there. Exploring its chambers and battlements was a personal highlight of my visit to Cardiff. Truly a destination that resonates with both history buffs and casual visitors alike.

Slim B β€” Google review

Outstanding castle with a long and colourful history. Many features can be seen from the different stages of its development from the Roman foundations, Norman Keep, to the current relatively modern restoration and use as a residence, to name just a few.If you're in Cardiff, then enjoying a couple of hours here is a must do.

Michael Lees β€” Google review

It was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking . The Christmas lights and decor was top notch craftsmanship and I will recommend doing it at night during the winter to enjoy the Christmas lights. It’s also free entry which is a plus just for the public space but you have to get a ticket to enter the main castle. The ice skating looked really nice but we didn’t try it cause of time but if you’re into ice skating, I’m sure you’ll love itπŸ₯°

OJIMA DANJUMA β€” Google review

I really liked the castle. It's a pity that some rooms were closed. I would also like the cashiers to warn that some parts of the castle cannot be visited unless you are part of a group with a guide. We bought regular tickets and couldn't get into the clock tower.

Lada Salamakha β€” Google review

This castle did not disappoint. There’s an app you can download for a self-guided tour, which I highly recommend. We didn’t pay for the extra tour that takes you through more upper rooms in the castle, but the rooms we did go through ourselves were extraordinary in their opulent detail. Such creativity and extravagance! There was something unique to see everywhere you looked. We also enjoyed learning about the role the castle played as an air raid shelter during WWI. There were also great views from the castle keep.

Joy Bisesi β€” Google review

Please download the cardiff castle app and carry your earphone before you reach castle. The entry fee is a substantial amount (as compared to other castle in UK) visa viz what it offers. Only the castle entry is on payment. Time required for the visit is maximum 2 hrs. Nevertheless the surrounding area is also well maintained and one can spend time with family without the entry fee. Basic snacks, sandwiches and coffee is available. It's a good experience.

Traveler By Choice β€” Google review

Great place to visit. Not cheap but worth it. The extra charge small group guided tour is essential. The guide was great, interesting with a theme to the visit and loads of little-known facts to illuminate the experience. All the staff we spoke to made us feel welcome and they all knew their stuff. Well done.

Jon Turner β€” Google review

This is the place that you can’t miss out if you coming to Cardiff! We visited here on Sunday and it was very busy! But really worth to visit, you can have a walk around outside of Cardiff Castle and of course it is really a good place to sit on the grass and enjoy the view and sunlight!Quite recommend to buy the tickets and get inside! ( it is toooooo busy on Sunday so we didn’t buy the tickets)

Ophe Lai β€” Google review

Cardiff castle is a must visit if you come here. It is worth it to pay the entrance fee if you enjoy the history and culture. Seems to date back to the 3rd century time of Romans. The old Roman wall is evidence of the same. If you go as a group i would recommend to take a guide since some areas like the castle tower and castle rooms can be accessed only with guides

Stanly Wilson β€” Google review

This is a must! It is around Β£16 to get in, but it is a fantastic castle. The grounds are amazing and there is a lot to explore. I would have liked to go down into the depths, but I think having that intrigue of the unauthorised and unknown areas probably heightens the fascination of the experience. There is a tour which takes you to some of the unauthorised rooms from the clock tower, but we did not take this as you do have to pay a little more. The staff were really friendly and helpful which is always a plus.I would definitely go back!

Eon Wilsun β€” Google review

A good experience for showing people a Welsh castle. For the ticket you get entry into the beautiful castle where you can learn about it's history and look at the beautiful architecture, as well as the option to climb a tower that provides a great view of the city and castle grounds. There are also lovely benches to eat and relax. It's not an all day experience, but one to two hours is good enough to see everything in the paid area.

Evelyn Evans (missunify) β€” Google review

It is a must-see. It is really beautiful and was worth the visit. I have captured many beautiful photos. You will need to buy tickets at the entrance. Also, it is worth mentioning that You must wear comfortable shoes as you will need to climb many narrow stairs.

Terrific Historical and magical Castle. We really enjoyed our time here. It was really adventure to history and some places reminded us BBC TV series Merlin . It was amazing, we could remember the places from scenes and how actors acted there and loved it. However at the end of the corridor one place was locked and there was a sign that it was only for guided tour, we wanted to see it without guide though it wasn't possible. Anyway we could see so much more and took loads of memorable pics.

Munisa β€” Google review

Great historic castle atop the hill, apparently it is 2000 years old! You can imagine the castle dwellers feeling somewhat impregnable from enemy attack. It is a massive open space and there was a Christmas Market taking place within this large open space. Such a great vibe here.

Jack Coupe β€” Google review

Although you have to pay an admission to go into the Castle and other buildings, the grounds are free to go in. Very well preserved and a nice area to view the buildings from. Outside also impressive

Allan Pamphilion β€” Google review

A very interesting day ! You could spend a lot of time here. It is worth doing the guided tour of the Castle, in the summer you can also do a tour of the clock tower. The Tour Guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining.

Margaret Matthews β€” Google review

Very beautifull castle in deed. The original castle is really small. After entering the main walls, some parts are free so feel free to walk in and look around. You will know when u need to get a ticket. I think you would never need to purchase a ticket in advance or reserve anything. Enjoy…

Murat Uder β€” Google review

Wales is lucky to have a number of beautiful castles. Options for visiting include purchasing tickets for a tour of the castle itself, or if you are only here for a quick visit, then you can walk around the grounds for free.

Richard Newberry β€” Google review

This is an amazing castle. We recommend adding on the 50 min tour for a full experience (Β£4) and access to special ornately decorated rooms. Our guide, Gareth was fantastic. He did a great job of showing us all the intricate details of how each room was designed. Their is a lot of history here from ancient Roman times to now. You can enjoy the Cafe, which is situated right next to the ancient Roman wall, making for a unique experience. This a must visit in Wales.

Jason Fair (Nomadic Nerd Project) β€” Google review

Interesting going up the castle top and down to the war tunnels (Entrance follow the path right hand side from ticket office). They also got some kids' entertainment during Easter. It's a bit hard to find parking in Cardiff city centre.

Apple C β€” Google review

Over the top 19th century reconstruction at the 2000 year-old Fort/castle site. You can walk around much of the site for free. For 15 pounds you get entrance to the ornately carved, tiled and painted rooms, as well as the keep. We paid the extra 4.50for the guided tour, but it wasn't really worth it. You can get a similar amount of information from the free QR code audio app. I think it depends on which guide you get and hey, it's only 450!be sure to do the audio guide, otherwise you lose out on the significance of the site.

Visiting Cardiff Castle on a weekday was a delightful experience that allowed me to explore this historic landmark without the crowds. From the moment I stepped through the gates, I was transported back in time to a place filled with rich history and architectural wonders. The castle grounds are impeccably maintained, providing a picturesque backdrop for leisurely strolls and photo opportunities. I particularly enjoyed wandering through the intricate passageways and taking in the panoramic views from the top of the Norman Keep. One highlight of the visit was the guided tour, which provided fascinating insights into the castle's past and the lives of the people who once called it home. The knowledgeable guides brought the history to life with engaging stories and anecdotes, making the experience both educational and entertaining.Exploring the various rooms and exhibitions within the castle offered a glimpse into different periods of its history, from the opulent Victorian living quarters to the medieval banquet hall. Each section was carefully curated, offering a comprehensive overview of Cardiff Castle's evolution over the centuries.Overall, visiting Cardiff Castle on a weekday was a memorable experience that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in history, architecture, or simply looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. With its fascinating history, stunning architecture, and tranquil surroundings, Cardiff Castle is truly a must-see destination in the heart of Wales.

*did not do full visit with purchased ticket* this castle is lush! Much bigger than you’d think. Lovely open grounds for public access and a great place to stroll around or sit and enjoy the view. Ticket prices are a little steep for a proper tour on the inside of the castle

Georgia P β€” Google review

It was a new year's evening, so I haven't had full opportunity to see this castle in all its glory. However, according to what I saw at that time, I can easily say that it is huge, with a lot of space inside, a beautiful tower with many decorations, and Norman Keep. According to the parking situation, there are many private ones not far from the castle, and there are also many "Park and Ride" parking facilities available on the local streets. A special thanks to the security guards for their very polite way of greeting and friendly approach.

Stadium

Sights & Landmarks

The Millennium Stadium, in Cardiff, is the national stadium of Wales and is often used for rugby matches and concerts. It was built to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup.

PRINCIPALITY STADIUM TOUR COMES HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!So, I couldn’t catch a game because Rugby season is over, but on my latest trip to Cardiff – I ended up doing the tour at the Principality Stadium (aka the Millennium Stadium). It definitely comes recommended. The guy we got (Hugh) was very interesting and very well spoken for a Welshman (educated at Rugby School). It was really interesting from start to finish, and you got to see all the parts of the stadium you could possibly want. From the very highest seats, to pitch-side. To the changing rooms, tunnel and royal box. There’s lots of interesting memorabilia around too!If you wear an England shirt like I did – you get a bit of light-hearted ribbing but it’s all good fun.Overall, for Β£16.50 – it’s definitely worth the money, as it lasts about 90 minutes.Would love to catch the next Six Nations match here, probably against England.

Ninh Ly β€” Google review

Such an iconic stadium, right in the middle of Cardiff City.Excellent atmosphere, and completely filled to capacity of almost 75,000 the day we were there - Ireland v Wales for the first round of the 2023 6 Nations Rugby. The roof was closed, which made it an almost surreal experience - such a big place, but felt like a much smaller venue - view was perfect, which I expect everyone in the stadium would say.Easy to get into & out of stadium, with plenty of access to food & drink locations.

Russell Durnin β€” Google review

We Went to go see Coldplay and our seats were incredible. We didn't have to queue at all and the stewards and security were helpful and friendly. The atmosphere was amazing and the sound was great. We had the best experience ever. Totally recommend this venue.

Zac Maddocks β€” Google review

For a fairly modern stadium there isn't a great amount of leg room if you are tall, but well worth a visit.View was excellent for the Wales v England rugby match from our seats that were on the second row of the second tier right behind the posts. The matchwas played with the roof closed due to the bad weather.Within easy walking distance of Cardiff Central train station and is in the center of Cardiff very close to shops ,bars and restaurants etc.

Alan Barlow β€” Google review

The Millennium Stadium is an epic and great venue for sports and music events alike!I was proud to come here for a Six Nations game, the atmosphere was electrifying! There are plenty of facilities located here, all of which are clean.

Samuel Whatley (Sam) β€” Google review

Great venue , friendly people ..as always across the border ...Didn't get full appreciation as roof was on, but shows brilliance of structure for all weather event venue. Great acoustics and sound. Easiest venue to get to and get out of , compared to nightmare of London 02 . I'd def return there .

Attended the Wales v Scotland game. Fantastic venue and have had a great view at every seat... front a few rows from pitch to last row at the top. Atmosphere is fantastic every time. πŸ‘Œ

Claire Parker β€” Google review

One of the best stadiums in the UK.Entry into the venue was quick and easy, even with thorough security checks. The only issue I had on the date of my visit was that the concessions stands around block U17-U22 had all run out of food within an hour or two of opening. The event ran from 1500-2200.I would recommend a visit here, especially during a Welsh Rugby game as the atmosphere is hard to match. The national anthem is definitely worth witnessing in person.

Jammy3112 β€” Google review

Fantastic concert- staff ensured everyone’s safety and were thorough with checks. Lots of paramedic staff around to help people. My only complaint would be that the roof was kept on during the event and it was absolutely boiling hot.

Serena Edwards β€” Google review

Lovely day watching my team lose😩. Fantastic stadium and the staff were great and the Welsh fans were the friendliest I've ever met.Only complaint (hence the 4 stars) was the bar system, very unorganised, which made for longer than required waiting and warm drinks. That aside, still one if the best stadiums and can't wait for my next game there.

I went to watch the Rugby , WALES V's ENGLAND . The roof was closed. But the atmosphere was through the Roof. I Love going to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff . Its a great place to take family or go with ur friends. Everything available - food , soft drinks & alcohol , and of course toilets. You will definitely enjoy your day out at the Stadium . If its sports or music , Rugby or Concerts. . ....YOU WILL ENJOY .

It's always been a pleasure to shoot there and the staff go out of their way to give the best hospitality possible.

What a fabulous stadium. Easy to access, perfectly situated in the heart of the City. Wonderful, friendly staff. Fantastic example of an inside (outside) venue with the roof closed the rain was kept at Bay.The only negative was with the roof closed the acoustic at the gig I attended were poor.

Well appointed stadium with good sight lines for both sport and other events. Helpful stewards. Beer and food not cheap but plenty of Ι“ars and restaurants nearby. Entrances 3 and 7 are in slightly different directions when approaching from town centre but you don't find out until you get there - needs better signage in the street. Cardiff Central rail station less than 10 minutes walk.

The Principality Stadium, located in Cardiff, Wales, is a prominent sports and event venue. Formerly known as the Millennium Stadium, it has a retractable roof and is the national stadium of Wales. The stadium primarily hosts rugby union and football matches, as well as concerts and other events. With a seating capacity of over 70,000, it is one of the largest stadiums in the UK. The Principality Stadium has been the venue for significant sporting events, including Six Nations rugby matches and FA Cup finals.

Emmanuel Olowohunwa β€” Google review

Our first time at Principality and I can honestly say it was probably the best stadium experience I've ever had. The fact that we live within walking distance is the first plus, but mostly the organization of it all. We were given a gate number and stairwell number which lead directly to the section our seat were located. And that's just the stadium! Our seats for the Rugby match (although pretty high up) were perfect, had a great vantage point, the atmosphere was fabulous, loved every minute.

Nicola Rogers β€” Google review

Fantastic stadium with plenty of facilities. A lot of stairs to actually get into the stadium after the turnstiles, so anyone with mobility issues or even low stamina should seek alternative options. Not sure if there is a lift available ? Best to ask. Location perfect, right in the centre of Cardiff.

Cherie Woodhouse β€” Google review

Great venue for a corporate event or conference. Excellent catering. AV facilities great, our hybrid conference went really well. All the staff were professional friendly and super helpful. Would definitely look forward to being invited to a event here again

Kevin Freeman-Ferguson β€” Google review

I've been there a few times for football and more recently for Springsteen. It's a great stadium. Wherever you sit, you will have a good view. Staff helpful. Drinks and food are way too expensive, but they always are at Stadia, but maybe higher here! Would like to be able to take a water bottle in, even if empty with free water inside. That would reduce plastic waste. Great stadium

william hunter β€” Google review

Visited to watch the 6 nations, Wales v France match. The atmosphere was amazing throughout the pre-match and match itself (despite Wales losing). The great thing with Rugby though isctgat all dans are mixed up throughout the stadium, and all still remain absolutely safe with, of course, the expected banter pre, during, and post match.Yes, tickets can prove expensive and sometimes elusive, but a great day out.If staying over, advise stopping off outside of Cardiff itself, e.g., Newport, Swansea, as the rail transport links are easy, cheap, and frequent, given the hotels, etc, are more than triple the usual overnight rates for a big match day. Will definitely look to visit again for either the Autumn Internationals or future 6 nation matches.

Darren Dowd β€” Google review

Amazing venue to see live music. Walking distance from the City Centre, which as you can imagine before the event was extremely busy. Getting in and out was easy enough, although give yourself plenty of time as queues were significant. Post event trains were well marshalled although not enough of them with packed platforms. Bruce Springsteen was awesome

It is a beautiful place where you can have a good time with friends and family. You can have lunch in one of the nice restaurants too.

Was nice but think we visited at the wrong time of year to be really enjoyable as not a lot was open

Really has come on and improved. The bay is now fully open and vibrant. The ghost development of past has come of age.Really pleasant on a hot sunny day. Enjoy a reasonably price boat trip out if the weather is fine

It's one of my favourite places. Lovely walks and views. There are plenty of events and places to visit, do, and eat. Something for everyone.
