Is hairspray considered a liquid?

This one is pretty straightforward. Hairspray is a liquid, and it counts as a liquid by TSA. Both aerosol hair sprays and non-aerosol hair sprays are liquids.

So what does this mean for your packing list when you’re flying with hairspray?

Well, you’ll need to follow the TSA liquids rules for carry on luggage. In case you need it, here’s a reminder of what the rules are:

All liquids must be in containers that are 3.4 ounces (100ml) or smaller, and all containers must fit inside a clear 1 quart (1 liter) zip top bag. You’re allowed to have one liquids bag per passenger.

This will impact your ability to travel with hairspray since it’s considered a liquid.

Can you take hairspray on a plane in carry on luggage?

Since hairspray is a liquid, you’ll need to bring a travel sized bottle with you if you’re packing it in your hand luggage. The bottle must be 3.4 ounces or smaller and fit into your liquids bag.

This goes for aerosol hairspray and non-aerosol versions alike. If your hair spray comes in a bottle that’s bigger than 3.4 ounces, you’ll need to look in the travel aisle where you buy toiletries, and buy a travel sized hairspray.

If you use non-aerosol hairspray, chances are you can actually open the bottle. This means you can buy a 3.4 ounce or smaller refillable bottle with a pump, similar to what’s on your hairspray bottle.

Then pour some of your favorite hairspray into the travel bottle, and you’re good to go. Flying with hairspray is pretty easy.

Luckily the answer is yes…with some caveats.

Is your hairspray in an aerosol bottle? Then it must follow certain rules for flying with aerosols in checked bags.

According to TSA:

“Toiletry-type aerosols in checked baggage must not exceed 70 oz. (68 fl. oz) total and each container must be 18 oz. (16 fl. oz.) or less.”

So your aerosol hairspray is probably fine. You only need to worry about this if you’re traveling with several items that come in aerosol cans, like if you’re flying with deodorant that comes in aerosol form.

The other thing to keep in mind when bringing aerosols in checked baggage is how you pack it. Make sure the aerosol can has a cap and can’t accidentally start spraying.

It’s also a good idea to pack the can inside some kind of bag in case it leaks at all. You probably don’t want hairspray all over your clothes.

Don’t let those tedious TSA rules stop you from bringing hairspray on your trip. Hairspray is allowed on a plane, both aerosol and non-aerosol forms, but you have to follow the liquids rules and make sure your bottle is small enough.
