Onoff (Depardieu) is a famous writer who, while fleeing from a forest at night, was stopped by the police and taken to the police station in a small provincial center for investigation, since it is devoid of identity documents. Here the Inspector (Polanski) explains him that he'll need to keep him, as a formality, because that night in the woods a murder was committed . A long interrogation begins during which Onoff first confesses to have invented his own biography, and that his real name is Biagio February (name given to him because he was found just born, the day of St. Blaise, February 3) and he must his pseudonym Onoff and his first book of success to a mysterious homeless man, his teacher and friend.
